Just wondering what the average time to change a clutch on a mk4 tdi would be. I will be doing it outside with axle stands. Is there anything to look out for? cheers.
Not a job i'd be wanting to do on axle stands, it's a pig of a job on a ramp! what's the mileage on? I only ask 'cause if it's high then you might have to do the dual mass flywheel as well, they won't last the length of two clutches in my experience of them. I think the book time is around 6 - 7 hours but if you're on the floor then i'd allow 8 - 9, even then you'll be going some! I just hope it's not a six speed 'cause they're even worse
Also depends on how the car is driven not so much the mileage or age of the clutch. Mine went at 113k on a petrol 1.8T although I know the diesel clutches are prone to go earlier.
Haven't seen the car yet so don't know the mileage. Is it possible to change the DMF with a solid one from any earlier models? I take it the 6-speed is worse due to the bigger box/less room to manouvre?
5 speed you can change to a earlier TDI/G60/VR6 set up, 6 spds are availble with uprated clutchs at big money normally 6 spd box(pd's) are a big bugger to do on your back, normally when working on a ramp need 3 people (with a struggle depending on muscles!) to get one out verses 2 on a 5 spd even on axle stands 5 hours doable, on a ramp I've done it sub 3.5 hrs on a reg basis - with air tools and changing DMF, which a gun is all thats needed
02A + 085 = 02M ' ish or 02A + (020 X 0.70)= O2M'ish O2M have 3 shafts in with big cogs on it, and of course larger surface area of casing
Clutch is fitted!!! Surprisingly easy compared to a mk2 considering the weight. Took 2.25 hrs to get the box out, flywheel off and the turbo off cos I changed that aswell. Fitting was slightly more akward as I done the job myself. The hardest bit was probably getting the o/s output flange past the flywheel ring gear. In all it took about 9 hrs after cleaning out the inlet manifold, etc. IT WAS MINGIN!!! It was done on a sloped driveway aswell.
Well done, it is a pain getting it around the flywheel There easier compared to a rod change, less things attached IMO
