Maybe Maplin wasn't the best choice of cable tie stockists. *rolls eyes*

Tap it home with a mallet when fitting.

I went to GSF and bought the Laser tool for 17. How do i use it? [:$]

Am I supposed to get the clamp around the CV boot first or what?

There's a slit down one side and then about four square holes on the other and an "ear" between them. I just managed to get it on the "loosest" hole and slid it on over the boot. Is that right? I just pince the ear with the tool now to tighten it?

I usually go around the CV with some paper towle and brake cleaner, inside and out to make sure there's no grease where the cv boot touches the cv, and likewise where the clamp touches the boot.

when it's grease free in the joining area it's usually fairly easy to clip the clamp on to it's first notch by hand.

I have some end cutting pliers (pincers) with really long handles and blunted blades (I filed the round) specifically for the task of nipping the clamp up. I then tap it flat with a hammer. this sometimes slackens the clamp so don't overdo it.

i did buy some special pliers for the job, but they were rubbish, hence why i made my own by grinding/filing some old pincers.

Last time i had to do some cv boots, i found that it was cheaper to buy the other type of metal ties. they work just like zip ties but with a little metal ball that grips on the tie rather than the clicky bit you get on plastic ones. the tool to tighten and cut off the excess was much cheaper than the tool for the other type, you could probably do just as good a job by pulling it tight with pliers then cliping the excess off.
