Just carried out this mod on my '87 GTI and thought itd be handy to have all the bumpf in one place, for the dosh its a wicked brake set up for fast road/track use ;)

Depending on what model and year your weapon is you may or maynot need all the parts.
Mine being a pre '88 8 Valve needed everthing!

    These are the part no.s from Euro Car Parts;
    - 22mm 16v Master cylinder 132440231
(you may also need 2 bungs for the master cylinder as mine came with 4 outlets)
    - G60 Caliper N/S L/H 133440611
    - G60 Caliper O/S R/H 133440621
    - G60 Discs ATE 104440340
    - G60 Pads ATE 101440025

    Parts you can't get from Euro;
    - G60 Carriers, you can get these from VW but they are abit pricey at 80+vat each!
I sourced some second hand from a breakers.
    - Late 16V Hubs, again a breakers is your best bet, you will need the lower ball joints too as they are bigger than the early ones 19mm instead of 17mm.
    - Dont forget brake fluid!!!

If you have a 239mm disc brake set-up you will need all of the above

If you have a 256mm disc brake set-up you shouldn't need the hubs or master cylinder

Its worth having a play with the load compensator valve to get abit more rear bias when youve got 280's on the front to even out the stopping! :p

  2. been scratching my head with differant bits of advice.

    [:s] " post 88 8v dont need the 16v hubs / ball joints as they are the same as 16v " [:s]

    IS THIS SO ????????????????

Some of the late 8v's had the 256mm brakes which means you don't need the hubs, sure it's not all of them from 88 onwards though.

    Quick hijack.
Im after a set of g60 280mm carriers to go with my Girling 16v calipers...
Can i use carriers from another car with the same size disc? Didn't some of the mk3's come with 280's and not 288's??
    cheers tony.

Only 90 spec 16vs got the 256 front brakes, post 88 8vs certainly didn't. It is said that the very last of the rollout 8vs might have got 256 brakes, but I've never seen any solid evidence to support this

    I think the MK3 8v, 16v & VR got 288s after 96?

    Edit: Right looking at ETKA:
    8v, 16v & VR post 95 got 280s, the VR got 288s in 95, then possibly they all got 288 from 96.
    It doesnt say model numbers for 280s & 288s from 96, just PR-1LD for 280, and PR-1LN for 288 [:s]

So what mk3's had the 280's then?

    before 96

the MK3 VR went to 288's when the highline came out in '95. The 16v only got them on very late R plate models, and I think the same applies to 8v GTI's also

MK3 8v GTI, 16v and VR6 had 280's fitted in their model life - its pretty easy to tell the difference in the calipers, as the 288 version is a lot larger

    Errr, oh yeah! [:$]

also worth remembering that the Seat Ibiza/Cordoba was fitted with 280's....

    Mk2 Ibiza 2.0 8v = 256mm
    Mk2 Ibiza 2.0 16v = 280mm
    Mk2 Cordoba 1.6 SX = 256mm
    Mk2 Cordoba 20. 16v SX = 280mm
    Mk3 Ibiza 1.8 20vT = 280mm

all will fit the Mk2 Golf [:D]

    I'm getting confused...
    I have a 16v 1990 (late spec)
To do the 280mm setup from the standard 256mm:
The car already has the 22mm master cylinder and the hubs,
Do I only need to source G60 calipers and carriers? (can I not use the standard 16v calipers with G60 carriers?)

  14. yes all u need is the caliper and carriers
i have been told u can use 256 calipers with 280mm carriers but have never tried it

You can use 16v calipers on a 280mm set up but you will need narrow pads (less friction material) as the G60 calipers are wider.

So if I use G60 carriers and G60 discs, 16v calipers and 16v pads that should work?..

might need to so some modifications:
    1. Use part worn pads
    2. Grind down new pads
    3. Grind down slider pins

Because, as said the G60 disc is thicker, and the G60 caliper is also thicker to compensate.

If you go the G60 swap route, which brake lines do you need to use, MkII or Corrado?

either, you might even get away with what you have already, the fittings are all the same thread. Braided line kits have tons of length so should fit any!
