It wasn't as involved as i thought.

Basically both indicator wires had been spliced into and a branch taken off each.

The big yellow/black wire from the ignition was the same, just a branch.

I thought some wires would have been cut and swapped to make the alarm part of a loop but it wasn't.

    Am i missing something?

The wires that may have been cut would be...
    Starter (red + Black)
    ignition (black)
    fuel pump (yellow + red)
these will need to be traced and rejoined.
The rest of the wires should just be tapped on.
indecators (green + black, white + Black)
    power (red)
    door pins (brown + white)
    X line (black + yellow)
you should just be able to cut these but make sure you tape up the ends.
The above info is off the top of my head so the wires may be the other way round (i.e. black + red instead of red + black)

If you have any other questions please let me know.
if you are local i can take a look for you.

    hmm, interesting.

when we looked at it last night the only wires that had been tampered with near the back of the ignition barrel where the indicator wires & the black & yellow as Ian said. The large black&red wire had been cut but then simply rejoined using a crimp which seemed odd (i.e. it wasn't tapped into or anything).

perhaps these other wires have been cut into somewhere else to make it harder for tea-leaves to by pass the alarm? It might be worth tracing them back to the engine bay where they connect up.

I thought it had a branch off it? I've printed Baj's list off so i'll attack again later on.

It did seem very very easy to remove!!

(except the f**king glove box [:x]

no, there wasn't anything connected to that wire which seemed odd. It was also a different coloured crimp to the others so it might have not even been done by the alarm fitter?

I'll remove the crimp and solder the wire.

When i fit any alarms i try and keep the cuts away from each other so they can't just be rejoined. i normaly cut a section of wire out so you cant just match the colours and rejoin. i also use random coloured wires to extend any cables this way it is very difficult to trace the wires. so it may seem that the wire you are looking at has been cut and rejoined but it may have another cut further up the cable.
Are you having any problems with the car or are you just trying to remove the old alarm?

I am in Slough near Heathrow. i would be happy to take a look if you can get to me. Where is Rochdale??

    Rochdale is above Manchester

I've removed the alarm at the same time as fittinf and engine, loom and ecu from a late mk3.

I'll delve a bit deeper into the wires tonight. :)

OK I went one better than checking the wires by eye.

I removed the entire ingition loom

I Soldered any dry joints, made sure all the wires were uncut and the circuit tested the lot and they were all fine.

    Thus my hypothesys:

    Knackered Ignition Switch!!!

The switch is seperate from the barrel. you may have to drill the screws out that hold the switch in place though. i can't remember.
    you can test you switch.
    turn ignition on.
    red 12v+ (battery feed)
    black 12v+ (ignition)
black+yellow 12v+ (x-line, will have no voltage while cranking)
brown+red 12v+ (if you have this wire, its an accesory live)
red+black (this is only live while cranking)
The most important wire is the black one as this feeds the ignition.

What is you actual problem with the car.
will it not start, crank, or no ignition??
give me exact details of what you are doing and i will write you a step by step guide on what to test and how.
    :)
Are there any wires in that loom that are not connected?
Also what engine have you fitted (what size and year)
Sorry i know you mentioned it in one of your posts. [:$]

    All wires are connected.

When i turn the key the fans come on but no ignition lights and the car doesn't crank at all.

I've put some tempory wires into this look so the car should start without using the ingition switch, i'll let you know how i get on tomorrow

Give the black wire a feed it should turn your ignition lights on. the fan and stuff is powered by the black and yellow wire. if it works when you give the wire a feed then it is your switch. if it still won't come on then you have a problem further down the wiring.
let me know once you have tested the above.
i am sure we can get to the bottom of this. ;)
