Bold statement but I stand by what I say. You guys need to get out of the world of engines with Antique K-Jet crap flaps and banging on about carburettors, it's not the 1950s... I'm VERY interested in doing a mk2 project with a 2.0 TSI from a mk5 running on Factory PCM. We need a 2.0 TSI engine, gearbox/engine bay loom and ECU and a customers mk2 CE2. You know where to find me
erm... back on topic please. Gaz has a CE1 car, so touting conversions on CE2 cars isn't really for this thread.
Gaz, if you want a hand fitting this, let me know. I'd be happy to help out. I'm still toying with the idea of an ABF transplant.
GVK am I right in saying that the VR6 power you have isn't the hard bit, it's making it handle that wasn't all that cheap...?
Today is the day you pick up your new 8v engine is it not? Much excitement in the Gaz household I imagine. If you had picked up a 16v engine, there would have been much excrement in the Gaz household.
If you want it to properly handle be it a 16v or VR6, you got to spend money on suspension, ARBs and a diff. It's as easy as that. My car was pretty sorted before the VR6 as had coil overs, big ARBs etc - it's when folk fit a VR6 with 8v standard suspension the problems arise. You don't have to spend 1000s - my H&R coil overs were 120 off the classifieds on here. If you're one to scan the classifieds you can make your mk2 handle on the cheap, all you need is the advice to select the parts you need, this is where this forum comes in, as there a lot of us that have been there and done it, some of us for 15yrs or more... Ask anyone who has been out in my mk2 how it goes/handles, it speaks for itself.
No tomorrow now, assuming I can borrow the old man's car to pick it up in. How much does a 2litre 8v engine weigh btw?
hard to say, must be a good 150-200Kg but it depends whats on it. Don't forget to take some cardboard and big sheets to soak up the fluids
I reckon they're about 100kg without ancillaries, but with head and sump. I can lift a bottom end on its own, but not a whole engine. TSC reckons he can lift a whole engine using cambelts round his shoulders as lifting straps. I've never tried that way. He was probably on angel dust at the time though, although he doesn't freebase cocaine, allegedly.
Oh yeah, If transporting in a golf or scirocco, just take the passenger seat out and line the area with cardboard. Cover it with a dust sheet / tarp / poly sheet and put the seat belt round it. a Piece of scaffolding board is good for walking the engine up to the door opening (needs two people.) If the engine's got oil in it, be careful you don't burst the filter, or let the engine tip over. Expect to find out that there's still a little bit of water in it somewhere - two layers of cardboard is good on the floor!
Cheers Mike. Its actually going in the boot of my Dad's Xantia, he's p/xing on wednesday under the scrappage scheme (Nissan are still doing it) so not too worried about mess/damage etc.
Sounds about right... Got rid of my old K-jet engine the other week. Complete except for the alternator and water pump. I managed to lift and carry it about six feet, then the lad who was buying it helped pick it up to throw it in the van. Dead easy.
