What is the best amount of revs to change gear in on a golf mk2? I've seen the two lines at 3000 (x10) rpm's is that when your supposed to change? When i push my 1.6 Mk2 Driver the clutch feels like it's slipping if i keep the power on while i change gears, although it quickly gets back into things.
but it makes alot of noise at this level! lol are you sure it wont er, break it? what do you do when you change gear? x. power off 1. clutch down 2. change gear 2a. start adding power 3. clutch up 4. power on full (down to the flo' matey) I mean, i do know how to drive, DOH! but when i try to go for the "ultimate acceleration" like in the carrera 4 we got its just doesn't feel right im sure im doing something wrong. In the porche its like someone is getting hold of your arse and pulling it back to your seat and then kicking you so hard that you almost crap yerself. 0-130 miles an hour ----in.....no time at all hehe.
Yes, but thats a porsche...dont compare that to a MK2 because (and i hate saying this) they are in a different league. Get changing at 5000-5500, thats best yer gonna get, if you do it right though it does go !!!. Also you shouldnt be looking at the counter to change gear...LET THE FORCE BE WITH YOU. Change gear when it feels right not at a certain amount of revs
1st to 2nd around 5000 2nd to 3rd around 4500 3rd to 4th around 4000(max, usually closer to 2 or 3000) and i havnt got any more gears bloody crappy 1.3
well on a closed road (lol) ive been at a 111 down wind lol although its advertised that the mk2 1.6 only goes 102mph. and thats at like 4900 rpms and becuase its got a sports filter on it, the engine sounds really loud hehe. i "get on 'all' up" on my golf before its nice and warm, it has to be treated with respect, im totally with you, with that kind of care it'll last plenty more years. usually i let the car warm up idling for 3-4 mins and then get going, then i wait for at least 10-20 minutes (depending on whether im in the sahara desert or london lol) for it to get warmed up.
bit off topic, but iwas just thinkni how weird it is that when you drive a powerful car (such as my vr6) you really take for granted how easily it will drive at silly speeds, and forget quickly about how hard you used to have to try, in your previous cars, to get into three figures!
believe me, when you're going at silly speeds in a front wheel drive hatchback it is scary! lol. although the golf seems to be quite friendly if a little noisy at 100mpg, albiet you swines with vr6's and g60's will be cruising along at this point oblivious to squeals of my poor 1.6's engine that has had enough punishment from its last 5 owners lol. VIVA LA GOLF!
Read the manual, it states that you should drive off IMMEDIATELY after starting the engine. It doesn't do the engine any good if you leave it idleing from cold.
As for when you should change gear its all to do with the gear ratio's and torque curve for the car. You want to change up a gear when the available torque in the gear above is greater than the one you are in. The gearbox will drastically alter the ammount of torque transmitted to the wheels, so with a close ratio g/box you will want to change sooner than an economy box. There is a way to work this out with a torque curve for your car and details of the ratio's in your gearbox. With a 4 speed gearbox the ratio's will be more spreadout, so you would want to rag it more before change. Conversley if the cam in the car is quite mild and the torque is good in the low rpm then you would want to change sooner. So summing up, if the engine torque x gear ratio at Y rpm is less than engine torque x gear ratio at Z rpm then change up a gear. Y is the rpm in the current gear and Z is the rpm what the engine would be turning if you changed up a gear.
well according to matey matey, the 8vavles were known to have quite a bit of torque in the low end rpm band, but my main problem is, that that torque still has to go through your clutch and that is where the difficulty arises, gear changing is all well and good, but i think my clutch might be a bit worn becuase it feels like its slipping before the power comes back, or may i was changing at wrong rpm's, but either way i'm not really used to driving the golf, but it HAS to be the most fun you can have in a car! Oh and thanx for the idling statement i looked it up and indeed haynes says that it damages spark plugs if you idle for too long cheers mate! but its rather like golfbloke said, i change it when it is either too noisy lol, or if i feel the engine is having a hard time pulling the vehicle in which case it relates to what you said, there aint enough torque to pull the car and thus change down a gear. and of course its visa versa. oops, sorry for the typo, i mean 100mph!! damn g and h keys are next to each other lol. i think my mk 2 carb gives me about 27mpg but im not complete sure, since i dont have a trip computer, but i calculate it using the milometer and how many gallons i stick in the tank. i finally got my sig up, can you see it??
yay, jettin', you seem to know loads about cars, is it easy to adjust my idling screw on my carb so that when its warm it doesnt idle about 1200rpms? its annoying becuase i just fitted a sports filter and had it rejetted by the guy told me to adjust the idling screw after 500 miles. My haynes manual has laods about fast and slow running, i dont wanna mess with that OH, right before i forget, i've stuck in a 2000watt amplifier from the US in the car, can the standard alternator in the Golf mk2 handle that (on top of a 400 watt amp and 2 head units which dont run speakers) My lights seem okay when everything is powered on, but my car sometimes dies on me! when my volume exceeds 3/4's of the sound output (which really hurts your ears, but its all in the name of loud good quality music that of course no one outside your vehicle should be able to hear, unlikely becuase of your custom backpipe lol) Edited by: Hiren
nah, thats not scary...try racing a single seater in the rain...thats real fear!! (120mph with 3 feet visibility)
