Ok, so my renewal has come round for the MK2... and passed [:$]. I wasn't driving the car at the time do didn't renew, but as we know our good friends at the government need us to keep our cars insured when we arent using them... So, to set the scene... I have an '85 MK2 VR6 Track car that I want to have the option to use on the road. The best price I have had so far is 398 from HIS which is actually 50 or so more than it was last year.. but here comes the complication... I'm going to live abroad in November so will want to cancel the policy. With this in mind I approached HIC to see how much I would get back.. This is what they responded with:

"In reference to cancellation in November it is obviously possible but the underwriter offering you the best rate as shown in your quote does have a high cancellation charge. The company will retain the commission on file and the administration costs and then will charge 65% of the remaining premium and refund 35%"

Basically meaning I'll get **** all back.... most of the specialists who can do monthly payments need a massive deposit, and their interest rates are silly... so what do I do? I'm buggered if I'm going to shell out 400 to drive the car occasionally for 4 months.

Any clever ideas would be greatly received.

No wonder so many people drive without insurance....[8(][:x][8(][:x]

As has been discussed at length in a couple of threads on here, you don`t have to have a car insured if your not using it. As long as it`s not on the road and has been SORN`ed, then there is no requirement for it to be insured...

Slightly different in your case, where you want to use it a few times a year, so you`ll probably have to bite the bullet or look into trailering it to trackdays.

If you feel you have to insure it then maybe look into a Classic limited milage type policy, which should work out far cheaper.

Have a look through some other threads in this section where people have found decent quotes.

The problem I have is that a lot of people won't cover it on a classic policy because it's so modified..... despite the age. Will give Footman James a go though, see what they can do for me.

Went with Flux in the end.... 390 all mods covered. Spoke to them about the going away thing, they spoke to the underwriter and I'd get 200 back cancelling in November, that i can live with :)
