Been trying to sort out a starting problem on a 92J passat turbo diesel. Sometimes it starts on the key, but sometimes the engine turns really slowly on the starter for about a turn then grinds to a halt. The car always bump starts fine. I have bypassed the ignition switch - problem still persists. I can hear the Stop Solenoid clicking as it should, but could this still be faulty. Anyone with any ideas? (Battery and Alternator are only a couple of months old)
Do the diesels have starter motors --- if so then that sounds like a possibility. Next time you have this prob, put it in gear, then rock the car backwards a nd forwards a little -- this manually turns the starter motor round a bit --- then try starting
Yes, they have starter motors. Suspect ignition relay may not be closing properly. Anyone know which relay is for ignition on the passat? Edited by: Magic Bus
