Is a Polo AEX engine a direct swap for a Mk3 Golf AEX?

As per the title, a friend has purchased a very clean P reg Mk3 Golf for his mother in law.

It has one problem, massive oil consumption, and lots of smoke from the exhaust and breather.

Compression varies from around 160 - 180 psi across all 4 cylinders.

He has decided to replace the engine with one from a breakers rather than persevere with this engine, as he needs it to be reliable, and not need topping up with oil evey 100 miles.

He has been quoted 99 for an AEX engine from a Polo, or 199 for an AEX from a Mk3 Golf. Clearly, if the Polo engine will be a direct replacement he might as well save 100 and go for that, but the breakers are saying they are different.

So, the question is will the Polo engine fit?
