Hi guys a friend of mine who was on this forum years ago wanted to share some information on what happened to the old Golf mk2 rally cars. Is there any interest in this for a post in the correct section? the cars were: C793 CYX C794 CYX C795 CYX C796 CYX If there is he knows what happened to every car. He had the police sent over by CE as at the time there was a lot of forum trouble. The police interviewed him under caution about his cars and parts but no action was taken as no crimes committed but at that point he left the VW scene. As he could never get the information out he wanted to share it now as time goes on and nobody will ever know what happened to them all.
What’s more intriguing the cars or the back story of the very narcissistic and vindictive forum member? Maybe best to focus on the cars thanks guys, Tom
I wasn't on the Forum when all that kicked off (went over to the Japanese side for a while), but it didn't sound good what happened over here..
Ok well the short version is: C793 CYX was re-shelled and run as known by the forum. C794 CYX and 796 had the reg plates swapped during the last few rallies. C794 CYX (really the 796 car) ended up on the Isle Of Man to be found in the 2010’s by a VW dealership who ‘restored’ it and ran it in some retro rallies….They registered it as 794 although they were told of the correct ID. C796 CYX (original ID 794) was stripped of parts and shipped in a container to Kenya back in the 90’s. C795 CYX was the only original car left (others had shell swaps during the rallies) It was housed in a garage in the South and left there. The guy who owned it would not sell it as it belonged to his father. It’s possibly still there? None of the cars had full VW vins and the shells had no ID markings whatsoever. The cars were rebuilt many times.
Just to add the forum member had been given an original shell, many parts like the peddle box, gearbox and engine bottom end. A matter roll cage was collected from C793 so a car was being built as originally registered but then came the police to check it all out on the ‘request’ of a ‘very concerned’ (CE) forum member who got the police and DVLA involved so the project was dumped and all parts were destroyed. As mentioned no action was taken despite ‘the worried concern’ of CE - forum member. There was no law saying you cannot build a car and the sum of the parts were enough to validate the registration document it was going to be registered with. In all it was too crazy to carry on and not worth the attacks that came from the extremely vindictive forum member. I’ve paraphrased and taken out the bad language guys. Seems a crazy time!
The parts were around for about 5 years after but left in the rain and rusted badly before anyone says it’s a shame. Everything ended up at the dump.
The cars had shortened vins not the same as normal VW vins on the documents and DVLA database but reality was nobody cared back then and a rally car was just rebuilt with a new shell if damaged badly enough. This happened to 796 and 794. There were never any stamped marks on the shell, maybe a plate was used who knows?
The same ‘attention’ was not given to the VW Press car LNV even though CE knew it was going to be reshelled without any DVLA notice so was no longer the original car but those were the days of you will be punished for not doing as I say or want and going against me…….
Few pics from the Manx rally listed as 87/89 - for context. Credit to David Harbey Photography who's page I borrowed them from.
It's that long ago I probably haven't properly remembered, but if I have got it right the prints below were up on eBay. Seller seemed to have a few of each and they hung about for ages unsold. Might even have been a third or forth one of something or other, but mustn't have interested me otherwise they'd be here too. Something vaguely tells me they were commissioned by a motoring magazine perhaps, and could be bought through them, hence them not being numbered? The Golf print has a signature, but I'm not convinced it's 'real', just part of the print itself. The Audi has nothing at all. They're both to big A2 size, so quite impressive... likely go up on the garage wall once I finally get the MK1 done / the place cleaned up again. Did a quick Google, the artist Craig Warwick seems to be quite prolific and specialising in car art. All the comments above about cars being re-shelled / numbers changed etc., has left me confused. It's possible this is C793 CYX, but I only say that because of the driver/co-driver names on the wing. Car in the print also seems to have a sunroof, which seems at odds with it being a rally car, but what do I know! Found this link too... lots of images/ close-ups to ogle. https://blog.usedcarsni.com/this-golf-is-one-of-only-fore-built/
Motorsport bodyshells come without a chassis number onto , these are special built leightweight shells sheet panels are quite a bit thinner in thickness... and a number brackets and sheets are not welded in..... and these could be ordered through VWM Other option is a bare shell taken off the production line...
Why can't a rally car have a sunroof? I'm not very knowledgeable about it, but it seems normal to me to have a sunroof.
