My daughter has just bought a 1985 VW Mk1 GTI Cabriolet off ebay. It goes slower than a slow thing. Can anyone tell me how I can tell if it's a genuine gti please? Edited by: juliechard
it may well appear tobe genuine, but if its not setup and/or parts are worse for weather, it could run like a bag of she-ite
Did some of the early cabrio's have the same 1.6 GTI's as the mk1's? Plus the Cabrio's weigh more than a hard top mk1. My bro's 1.8 carb'd clipper wasn't too bad. What sort of millege has it got?
exactly whats the baseline of slow here? it may appear to run smooth, doesnt mean its tuned for max performance too!
should be a dx engine,if you think its slow then id have the basic timing and mixture setup checked out. but as said the cabs arent v much speed wise anyway neil.
Thanks for all your advice. Took it along to VAG yesterday and they reckon it's a genuine GTI although their records don't go back to C Reg, only D Reg! But the engine is correct, it's a DX number and all the labels marry up. It's just had a new cam belt so they recommend getting the timing checked, which we will do shortly, as it is showing other signs of that being the case too. But thanks again, Julie
Cabrio's are slow, they're much heavier. But then they're a cruise machine, not mean't for fast running, well, unless you've put a 16v in it Al
My mk3 cam belt was two teeth out when i had that done, it was slow!!! When i got the timing re-done, it went much better!!! I'd say to get the timing checked...
