If you want to go DIY, you can use lead flashing on the standard linkage, Mike.

Yep, if you use a short shift mech (on the shortest setting) you have to grind away the back of the weight.:)

So with the weight only on 1 of the bars do you feel a difference moving the gearstick from left/right or forward/backward or both?

I have just done my mk2 and it feels lovely.

The best 12 you could spend this year.

Bugger!! Just went and picked mine up from VW and its the wrong one for the gearbox. I needed the longer one with it being the mk1 set up! [:$]

Anyone want it? [:D] Or would they refund me?

I've just ordered myself one of these for my mk2 8v from VW cambridge (12.95). Good lads, say it'll be in by 9.30am.

I'll see if I can match the 30 sec fitting time and let you all know if it makes a difference.

ok picked mine up from VW yesterday, under a min to fit and wow what a difference! Every change is now silky smooth, still a slight crunch into 2nd but that is so much better than it was, feels like a new box!

Put mine on yesterday, nicer feel to the gear change but didnt think it was that exciting, worthwhile for the money I guess.

The number on that linkage is 1H0 711 183 I think, Mk3 Golf, Caddy, Mk4/5 Polo part... which is the same number for what Mk2 owners are using.

Ebay auction could be wrong, in terms of saying it will fit a Mk1 when - by the sounds of it, it might not?

    ah ok.

Easiest (cheapest) bet is prob just to strap a weight to it then :)

    Buy New

After reading this, I contacted my local VW dealership, quoted the part number and was told that they would have to order one and would take 2-3 days. The cost 12 including the VAT

Not a bad investment if it means I will have a better gearshift.
