With the MK2 having taken an extended back seat until the gear selection problem's sorted, been using the 205 a lot more than anticipated for no other reason than it's the only oldie that's taxed / insured / MOT'd. Why he's known as Jacquot - Went out for a spur of the moment nip around yesterday morning saying as it was such a nice day and not much traffic about. 55 miles later had to rein myself in and go back home to the real world. Just loves being driven, engine will pull and pull plus so low geared it's hard not to embarrass modern stuff at legal speeds. Down side is he starts to run out of puff beyond 80mph but not really a problem, tend to avoid motorways anyway, B roads are much more fun!
Still one at the scrapyard I visit, plus a few 309 gti and parts there. Nice car, especially as its from Somerset. (Or registered there)
Scrappy's sitting on a potential money spinner there, specially the 309 stuff! Yes a Somerset car... sold by Herluin Garages, Searle Cres., Weston-Super-Mare. Don't know if they were Peugeot / Talbot in 1989, but there's a Peugeot franchise at the exact same premise nowadays. First owner was Autofleet of London, Hampton, Middlesex so guessing it was maybe a company car... or was leasing even a thing back then?
Pretty sure they were dealer then, there was also Stacey's in bridgwater that were Peugeot Talbot dealers for years, may still be, think they do hyundai now, and were nissan as well. Mid 90s I went to a launch party at herluin, think it was the 406.
That’s an absolute minter. Not seen one on the road for ages. My mate used to have a black one. Loving the Fue Orange accessory too.
Came with a stack of paperwork dating back to when it was new... spent a day sorting it all out and Googling names, addresses, even updating area codes and trying phone numbers on receipts and the like. Surprisingly got a few people to answer, but none of them any the wiser about the car unfortunately. Apart from plain old curiosity about it's history found this little ring when taking the car apart. I've un-crushed it as it was wedged behind the rear passenger seat trim. No worth, might be silver, maybe not, but could very well have a lot of sentimental value to someone, but it's still ownerless. Keep it on the spare key ring just in case someone gets in touch.
I have a new found appreciation for the 205 after blatting round a track in one at the weekend, made my MK2 feel like a sloth on valium on the drive home
I was speaking to a guy waiting at the place I bought my aircon pipes. We got taking about cars and he said he'd recently sold a 309 Goodwood..I guess he'll regret it when prices rocket. There's also a guy who lives near me and has a Radio One 205 GTI and a cabriolet turbo but they are keepers.
Had the Pug for over 3 1/2 years now, and doesn't seem like any where near that. What with covid, MOT exemption certificates and some other muppetry thrown in by the DVLA over the past few years I've always been in the position of having to MOT him when the better weather comes around. Let the insurance run on this winter too rather than move over to off road cover, difference was so little it didn't justify dropping the cover benefits for literally just a few quid. This year's the first then that I just have to tax and go, test's not due to the start of May. Plan was the start of April, but sorely tempted to do it in March instead. All belts / water pump / coolant seen to just before he went to bed last Autumn, the oil / filters / plugs done today, so should be all good to go. Do the emissions nearer to MOT time. Car's really starting to take on that nice weathered / lived in look (and the driver's seat's now the shape of my arse). Looks surprisingly clean in the piccie, but there's a layer of dust all over him plus last summers fly splat still across the front, kinda never got around to cleaning him back then. Think the miles'll be going on big time this year.
Nope, nor do I want it to be... enjoy using it too much to be worrying about it getting dirty or worn.
There's a post elsewhere that I must've made 11 or 12 months ago, just before the last MOT was due. Typically the drivers door electric window packed up the night before and a temporary fix was to swap out the passenger switch so at least the examiner could lean in or out of the car, just incase it might've been a fail on the grounds they couldn't conduct certain tests. Embarrassed to say I've only just replaced the dodgy switch (for that was all it was) and everything works 100% again... mad French thinking, if one switch goes they all do (plus the central locking)! There's definitely one thing the Germans do way better, auto electrics.
Latest MOT under his belt... Guy doing it mentioned there was a small leak from the oil temp gauge sender. It's fitted into a threaded hole on the reverse of the sump and I'd replaced it a few years back. Sure enough, turned out there was some slack in it and a nip back up fixed things. While I was doing it couldn't get my head around why there was some oil further over near the gearbox. Found out the dizzy was weeping and dripping down. Now know the oil ring seal is prone to giving up and mine had indeed become hard / broke apart taking it off. Going to guess it may even have been the original seal as the dizzy itself is Bosch date marked 945 which denotes May '89, the car was registered in October that year. Different way of doing things to the MK2's... has what I think is called a 'reluctor' wheel instead of the VW's Hall sender / trigger wheel. Most of the oil was going down the outside of the dizzy so didn't need to tempt fate by taking it apart furher thankfully. Can't get over the condition of it, maybe something to do with where it's in the engine bay / not as exposed as those on the MK1 /2?
Just noticed in the images that the vac. cannister is date stamped 485, that's May 2004... would explain why it's in such good nick. It's a proper Bosch and marked 3091, so correct to the dizzy / car. Only 19 years ago, but wouldn't it be great if you could waltz into your local factors nowadays to order something like that!
Bloody lovely that! Looks in fantastic condition too. They are really fun cars. Myself and a mate have had our GTI's since we were 18 (we're quite a way from that age now ) - was a few years back but had fun B-road tripping through wales in them. Really must do that again!
