It cheers me up no end to see I am not that much of a loser.

Quite right.

If it had gone well, it would have been very slick.

 

But it didn't, so rather than looking slick, it probably created one.

 

Once it was under water he should have fired up the jet ski and gave it some to push the van back up.
Assuming he had a bulkhead or he would come out of the windscreen

 

That would have been superb.
