Jonny - took my alternator belt off and it didn't make a difference, the noise is still there. I'm guessing it can only be due to something rubbing on the cam covers or the belt tensioner is knackered? However, when I removed the cam belt cover the other day, the noise was still there and I'm pretty sure the lower cover is plastic (unless i'm mistaken) so I'm not sure what to think now.
