    Hi guys

My Mk3 VR has developed a knocking noise when turning right. I'm assuming it's an outer cv joint.

Had a look under the car and everything looks OK. Had both wheels off the ground and there's no knocking noise when you turn them by hand (whatever way the wheels are pointing).

Any way I can be sure it's the cv joint? If it is, is it likely to be the nearside outer?

    Thanks in advance.

I would be interested in this cos mine has just (about 10mins ago!) started doing this when turning left! I can feel it through the steering wheel and pedals slightly also.

Sorry for hijacking your thread ColinT.

Mine doesnt have to be on full lock, the wheel can be turned slightly to the left for it to start knocking, once the steering wheel is staright again it doesn't do it.

i would go for outer cv joint as you suspect, jack it up each side, then start the car, go in first gear, build up some speed till you hear the clicking on that side, thats how all the ones i have had done are checked

    Cheers Dave

Does it on full lock (or a lot of lock) when turning right.

Never thought to try driving the car with one wheel up. Good idea :)

I can feel the knocking from the right hand side and it is definitely worse when turning left.

I had a similar thing on an old hilman, turned out to be the exhaust knocking against the chassis rail!! the cetrifugal forces were enough to throw out against it when turning right. this was after spending mucho time and money on the expensive bits. must be a moral to this one somewhere??
