The vf 22 compressor wheel but the vf 34 turbine end, so it spools up fast but runnes more air and more boost, the standard vf 34 will only run upto 350bhp and then falls flat on it face after that!!
I'm confused again think thats right or its around the other way [:s]

GT28RS lag out of this world?

hardly - you'd be hard pushed to notice more lag than on a GT28 to be honest (which has less than a T28)

and you can get over 300 bhp at barely over 1 bar out of one, as long as the engine is sound

don't believe everything you hear - in fact, don't believe anything you hear about turbos, unless of course i tell you
seriously, the majority of the time people struggle with lag with these turbos it's due to the installation, not the turbocharger.
    anyhow, good luck :)

This book is pretty good. Anyone considering starting a turbo project should read this first.

    other way round.. me thinks
VF22 turbine (eg '20 housing) and std VF34 compressor.

VF22 compressor & housing is completely different animal.
'20 housing is going to give you approx +20bhp top end power from what I know.
