Talking at the Rochdale meet today and the idea of KR cams for my ABF 2L 16v Mk3 cropped up!! Has anybody done this relatively easy mod (apparently)to theirs?? Does it run lumpy as f**k?, and is it worth it at the end of the day?? Any advice or experiences needed and appreciated!! Cheers!!
I would have loved to have made it to the Rochdale meet today but work got in the way! I recently saw posted the timings for ABF cams posted on here. It looked to me that the ABF inlet cam had more lift and duration than a KR inlet cam. At the time I thought that an ABF inlet cam might give good results in a KR engine. If the figures given are correct then the ABF inlet cam is "better" than a KR one. The exhaust cams, according to the figures, were ABF more lift less duration than the KR exhaust cam. To use a technical term, it might mean that pumping losses might be lower with a KR exhaust cam but actual flow might be similar. I would suspect that peak torque would arrive at different RPM but overall there would be little difference. Whichever cams getting the torque at lower RPM will "feel" more powerful on any 16v engine so I would suspect that you would only benefit from moving the torque/power curves around rather than gaining lots of power or torque! I could be completely off here of course but I have had a good drink!!! In reality there seems to be a lot of b!!!!!k's spouted regards tuning the 16v engine. Only my opinion of course.
I think cams with greater lift tend to give better torque at low engine speeds.. Anyone know what speed the ABF peaks at? (Obviously this would also be affected somewhat by the different induction, fuelling, block height etc, so not a definitive test) Sounds like a KR (K-Jet) fuelled ABF would be interesting Edited by: theboymike
132 lb/f @ 5995 on my old cordoba 16v stock 138 lb/f @ 4950 on the cordoba with a stock kr head/cams stock abf block.
a kr or abf both properly opened up would be fairly similar i'd say. the kr ports are a fair bit narrower which gives it its lower end edge over the abf , but then again the abf needs a bit of porting/polishing to get the best out of her too.
