We have an 89 (F) 1.8 16V that has a crazy rev counter.

If you accelerate or remain at a constant speed it's fine but the moment you release the accelerator it shoots round to 8K RPM and then back to where it should be. This happens every time you lift your foot off.

Anybody got an idea what is wrong with it?

    Thanks

It might not be picking up correctly from your gearbox. That would make it flick, when not at a constant speed.

We're talking Rev counters m8, not speedos. The rev-counter runs from the coil as far as I'm aware, nothing to do with the gearbox.

I know that on French cars in particular tend to shake if you ever disconnect the speedo drive but I don't think this would be related on a Golf.
