Guys, what's the largest CC that can be reliably achieved from an ABF block?

I guess you can up the stroke with a Diesel crankshaft (Dex?) but can you also increase the bore, without incurring reliabilty/temperature/airflow issues?

    Thanks

95.5 crank and 84mm pistons maximum. it'd need a good head to flow enough to 'feed' the extra capacity

    JE pistons are approx $600

2116cc is what i get, quickly working it out. head gasket may need to be custom, and the bores may need to be offset slightly to leave as much meat between the cylinders as poss

    like doing a 1380 in a mini

on vortex they say the 95 crank is the most expensive 1bhp you ever made

but f'k them. but if you just want big NA power, if you work it all out it'd probably be cheaper to just get a 24v vr6 and leave it standard. get DD or phaty to advise you on how to get it going

thanks fella; just interested that's all.

I will be fitting the ABF anyway (best option for me for reasons I won't go over AGAIN now!), I guess initial fitting will be a standard lump, but just interested to know what can be done to it, other than the normal breathing/mapping stuff.

Has anyone on here actually done any of this stuff? I know Dex has a tricky crank IIRC....

    ?

    :)

95.5 crank going in my NA 20v so we'll see

    hotgolf built Dexs bottom end

The bog stock ABF in gti69s car goes really well, i was amazed at the difference between it and my KR. I'd just go for a head from GVKs man in a shed, get a remap and leave it alone

NA 20v? next big thing once the Turbo madness has calmed down a bit I reckon.

as for ABf mods, yeah I'm thinking you're right; the standard lump should initially deliver the day-to-day performance gains over my digi 8v that I'm really looking for; should be enough fun without being a monster I guess!

    Thanks

    :)

GVK's Man in the shed? Whom?

I presume it's just a polished/flowed version of the original ABF head? Is he cheap (sexually?)?

You'll get some good gains from using a diesel crank, but mainly in the torque area.
On standard cams and my own modified head, lightened/balanced/knifedged diesel crank, running 17's and without having the car set up I'm pushing 178.5bhp and 160lbs/ft torque. The car was pinking like a mother and not running right at all!
So with a set of 15's, some high lift cams, a 4 branch and a set up I'll be looking for over 190bhp confidently. Even better in my mk1 too [:D]
Damn those DODGY diesel cranks!

As for bore sizes. I've heard of people using 84.5mm pistons, but I've also heard that they burn alot of oil.
You'd have to take your block to someone in the know and is competent at doing this properly.
They'll have to re-bore and space the bores correctly as they will be offset from the original bore spacings, to utalise the the amount of meat between the bores and that at either end of the block.

    Cool.

If re-boring is going to be problematic with regard to cylinder wall thickness, then it's unlikely that I'll entertain the idea.

Like I said I'll most likely just bung the standard ABF in at least to start with.

plenty of time for mods later!

    thanks again guys

    :)

No problems going to 83 or 83.5, but any bigger and you'll be offsetting bores.
Pistons are cheap from the states at the mo and would be rude not to buy a set :p
