I've done hundreds of cage doodles when I should be working

Yes, this cage must be a fit and forget, can't afford time and cash to mess and upgrade, I need to get back on track…

I'll refit dash, windows, screen and roofskin, and will paint. The fusebox and location of the ECU will be a problem I guess.

I'll have a play with roofbar clearance.

I ran my old caged golf for years and wanted for nothing (except power and no rust!), it was great. The current car feels as if the shell is made from rubber in comparison, not nice. Can't wait for this to be done.

Any opinions on this staggered-diagonal fitment? Appears to be an X when viewed from the rear of the car but are obviously separate tubes. Seems to be a good way to achieve triangulation in two places with saving a little weight? A harness bar would be full width.

Mine is like that, but the opposite way round.

There is a remote possibilty that is a LHD cage due to the main B => C diagonal.

Two versions of Custom Cages work. Both a work of art. Like the little touches like the brace section under the rear strut brace section on the Lupo.

Ah yes, I like that a lot. Yours is one of the few threads I haven't got round to reading yet.

Diagrams showing preferred design. Some bars trimmed for budget reasons unfortunately. (Thanks Steve.)

Deano explained a dash bar could go in and retain the heater which is good news, it looks tight though! X-doorbars with gusseting coming too. Harnesses to go back to rear brace, which I actually prefer to harness bars anyway.

Shame to have to paint those welds!

Really looking forward to seeing it now…

Mmm, this is turning into a build thread, may have to succumb after 8 years [:D]

Glad it's working well for you

Deano's welding is a work of art, IMO

Well, I nearly swamped myself with excitement when I saw this in Deano's workshop!

Big thanks to Deano, the pictures speak for themselves (more in a sec) if you're looking for a recommendation.

Good to meet Mike H, thanks for your help, good to natter. I just made it back in time with the trailer, bit of speedy towing going on… ;)

Detail and fun with the fisheye. Deano says it's about 66kg.

Nice pics - usual standard of work from Deano... I'm not on commission, in case you're wondering ;)

Looking forward to seeing the finished car on track sometime.

I was wondering if this thread should move to the Track Prep section, as it's not really a Northants thread any more?

Good idea, more people will see it and I'll update as I make progress.

Deano was funny, muttering away that he wasn't happy with it, never happy with his own work!

Next job cut dash to fit, send for flockage, then think about binning the heater. Anyone with any tips on deleting/reconnecting coolant pipes, pipe up! Then think about painting this thing.

He's a perfectionist. I told him he should spend more time looking at other people's work, then he'll appreciate his own work better. You know he makes all those gusset pieces out of sheet steel as well - you'd think they're pressed out on a machine to look at them. ;)

Simplest way to delete the heater hoses is probably a U shape in copper pipe where the heater valves are... Someone might now a neater way though.
