about a month ago my mk2 golf developed a fault... when you steer slightly of centre to the right you could hear a loud knocking noise. I later discovered it only happened if you were accelerating as well. This was happening intermittently for about a week so I booked into vw specialist, thinking it was the anti-roll bar bushes.
Only when I went to pick her up they said they could find anything wrong... they had found a very slight knock on full lock (steering rack), which was nothing to worry about just a sign of old age. So I drove her away and indeed she was fine. Well that was over 3 weeks ago and now yesterday the fault has come back worse than ever!! Its still the same although when I'm going slower the steering wheel violently twitches from left to right, and the knocking is so loud and horrible I'm worrying its doing a lot of damage.
Can anybody advise on what could be wrong.... I'm going to book it back in to the garage, but as they couldn't find it before- I would like to be able to pint them in the right direction!! [:^(]

lower balljoints maybe, or a square roadwheel

could be the diff has moved, check for gearbox case damage and oil leaks

Most probably ball joints and/or tie rod ends.

Replace both items and that should do it.

Our Jetta did this about 2 years ago. Started off making a terrible banging noise going round left hand corners. Then it stopped for a few days. It came back and progressed to doing it all the time! I left it a couple of days until I could get it in to the garage. On the morning of taking it to the garage it didn't do it!

I assumed it was a driveshaft and so did the mechanic when I told him. We got it to the garage anyway but he couldn't find anything wrong! 2 years later it has never happened again. The Jetta passed it's MOT last week with minimal work!

I had checked for loose bolts, something hanging off and looked for something trapped under the car, you name it! Bizarre!!!

i put my money on worn out rear wishbone bushes, they make all sorts of horrible knocking noises when changing direction, going from forward to reverse, over bumps etc...

i had this, it was the ball joint on 1 side, 1 of the bolts had dropped out and the other 2 were just about to! [xx(]
Turns out haynes tourque settings need to be taken with a pinch of salt, so afdter that I just wadged em up tight, no problems since!

If it was a CV I doubt the steering wheel would move about, onless it was REALLY bad, like just about to explode bad

Wrong, my CV's on the mk1 were intermittent for a while & would cause the steering wheel to vibrate left/right of their own accord then settle down (didn't know what caused it at the time) & only seemed to play up under heavy acceleration or speed then i parked it up one day & put it in reverse, loads of revs & no movement.....strange, got out & looked underneath & the drive shaft was hanging down with half the CV attached to it.

have you cheaked front wheel bearings for movement on the hub or a lose wheel . sounds like bushes on wishbone . get it up in the air and get a mate to tern the steering and yank the wheels and see what moves .ive see nackerd bushes on cars and the garage said there was notthing wrong . you cant go wrong by haveing a quick look your self

MY golf makes a knocking noise under acceleration while turning left, garage pinned it down to downpipe hitting steering rack when engine moves slightly when accelerating.
There is a fag paper between steering rack and downpipe when not running. I'll be fixing the downpipe with the universal adjustment tool this winter though. (this is on a mk2 driver auto with full 8v GTI exhaust ).

Im getting a rather nasty knocking noise which goes in time with the wheel revolution, it looks as though its the N/S Cv joint as the boot is split badly. But not only was it causing the constant knocking but its also causing bad vibration through the steering wheel and actually pulling to the left. Repacked it with a shed load of grease tonight and took it round the block and it seems to have cured it till i can fix it properly at work tomorrow.
