just been for a run in my mates standard (wait for it...) mk3 8v, and it felt more lively than a mk3 16v! It seemed to rev better, didn't have a long gear change, and didn't do that gay 'holding the revs' thing that the 16v does.

most of u will think i've been on the crack again, but has anyone else experienced this?

They use different gearboxes, the 8v uses an 020 whereas the 16v uses an 02A. The latter has longer gears and a flywheel that weighs a tonne !

the same can be said about the various mk2 models and there gear ratios, clutch diameters.

must agree on the 8/16 valve front. i find that the 8 valve has a better feel to it even if its not the quickr of the two (that said neither are quicker than a mk2 valver:lol: )

So, I think we have debated this extensively and the only sensible choice once you have sold your Mk2 valver is to look for a really, really nice late M2 valver

Treat you 16v to a supercharger, best off all worlds then!, a bit of work but well woth the effort!. Failing that have a look around for something turbo`d, treat yourself to a bit of torque either way..

    ABSOLUTELY!

clio 1.8 16v. Very nice looking, but driving position was a bit funny, and It was no faster then a good 8v mk2.

a sub 2k 200sx wouldn't see which way a valver went if corners were involved.

VR6 corrado for less then 2K? i don't think so. start at aroun 2600.

Just stepped up from my mk2 8v to a ST170, and beleive me, it takes a lot of car to beat a good mk2 16v.

ehhh?? Think the whole forums been smoking crack. Ive driven a couple of mk3 8v's and they are terribly slow. My 16v is a totally different animal and has no trouble against any mk3 8v. You must of driven a dud mk3 16v!!

More torque, more bhp, generally the faster car!!

get a series one pug 106 rallye. for 2k you could get a 1.6 16v converted one (like i had) and that will beat the hell out of a 16v golf gti mk2 and multiple other cars. ultra light. minus 800kg stripped with a minium of 120bhp in stock form from the 16v engine and easily capable of 145 bhp with cams and light head work and remap and exhaust change etc.

www.106rallye.co.uk take a look on this site in the forsale section.

and if you need any advice at all with buying one and what to look for, pm me. I owned mine for 3 years so know all there niggly faults and things to avoid.

    cheers Luke

great cars made so much better with the gti lump.

I've been taken out in both s1 and s2 rallyes with TB'd 16v engines circa 160-170bhp and they were fecking quick-the s2 recently pulled out a few car lengths on an s2000 from the lights!

Trouble is that the gearboxes seem to be the weak link, but if you're not going for huge power thats no issue, and tbh, either one with a standard 16v goes bloody well anyway.
