    Hi,
    1980 Mk1 GTi 1.6
I am fairly certain that the speedometer reading that I am getting is wrong.

When it shows about 40 mph I think the actual speed is closer to 30 mph.

The gearbox is a 5 speed manual with the number: 4T 18041
    2

The gear on the end of the speedometer cable is the white/natural coloured one.
Is the problem caused by having the incorrect gear fitted?
(I do have a red/orange coloured one in my toolbox).
Or do I simply have a faulty speedometer?

    Thanks

yep wrong gear, 4T box has a 3.67 final drive so you need a red gear :)

also if the needle has ever been removed it may have been refitted in the wrong spot. there is an alignment marker you line it up to, then you lift it over the stop. if its fitted to the stop then its around 10mph out
