    hello

transplating an engine and gearbox from a 87 polo into my
brothers 83 mk1 golf, golf is 4 speed and polo is 5 speed.
all other engine mounts apart from the nearside front gearbox
mount have been swapped over as the golf fits with three studs
onto the 084 gearbox and the polo fits with two bolts similar to
an 020 gearbox. we have tried a gearbox mount from a scirroco
but it doesn't fit, what can we do?

1.3 golf box is the same.... 085

They didnt issue the mk1 chassis with the 085 'box to the best of my
knowledge so you cant get the mount (unless summat wierd like a
mk1 scirocco 1.3 had a five speed?) Your best bet is to have one
    made
or make a jig your self and weld it up. I ran mine without a mount
as I am lazy but I figured it had a front mount, a back mount and a
mount on the alternator end so it might last a while before it
shit the box on the floor.... (it was fine BTW)

mk1 golf 1.1 & 1.3 were never available with a 5 speed box from the factory so you will have to make a mount from scratch this mount holds the engine & box weight the back & front are only there to stop it rocking so dont drive with out it or the engine will soon be on the floor and will twist you engine mounts on the body shell

ah sorry i thought it was like a GTI shell having the right mounts in the right place, you'll have to fab one up yourself to install it, the only mk1 5 speed would be GTi but this still wouldn't help you out, [xx(]

its only the mount at the alternator end thats different on the small engine cars, the rest are fine.

may sound a fool here but wont a mk1 gti mount do?
they look more like the polo mount(box end) than the mk1 4 speed mount [:s]

its 4 inches from bolt hole center to bolt hole center.
not sure on depth, maybe thats where your problems are?

i thought that, from pics i thought the gti mount would fit, i bought one and it definately doesn't. the block on a gti is wider, so the gearbox is further over, if you look at this mount
    [IMG]
and comare it with a gti one - where it mounts on the 'box is more in line with the big bolt through the bush on a gti, where as with the 1.3 its offset quite a way

Which linkage would you use for a Polo GT 'box?

Any modifications to the rod/gearshift lever for said 'box?

I used the same linkage as the golf driver, I used the little joint bit from a polo as it was in better nick than the early 80s golf one.

i used a combination of the polo and golf bits for the shift mechanism they are very similar anyway. the actual gate is the hardest - the golf one isn't wide enough for the 5th gear, but the polo one is just plastic as the tub thing mounts from underneath the car rather than from inside (or something like that!)
