We are currently building a Mk3 polo GT engine (3f) to fit into a mk1 golf

    The spec so far is

rebuilt bottom end with slight increase in bore
    ported and polished head
    schrick 252/276 cam
    volkwagen motorsport inlet manifold
    twin 40 dellorto carbs

    GT gearbox
    G40 clutch

and a few other odds and sods.

The question i've got for you guys is what ignition set up to use??

The cam has obviously got provisions for the mk3 polo distributor (which has a peg drive system) whereas the golf setup has a slot drive

Would we be able to use a Mk2 polo set up with any clearance issues??

    Thanks

    Gregg

the MH/2G distributor sould fit, its a peg drive one, plenty of clearance. You can seperate the loom that goes to the TCI unit very easily from almost any car of that type.

If you are passing I have a distributor from an MH that I have no use of, not sure if it works though never ran that engine. Might even have some loom, I'll check ......

    As a side note...

You will need to modify (cut'n'shut) the side gearbox mount to get the Polo GT 'box to fit and also use different bits from both gear linkages iirc.

Nice one, let me know mate, we are fitting the engine this weekend (and then probably playing with jet sizes for the rest of the year LOL)

ooops chucked the old looms I had, still got the distributor but the plug is missing from the hall sender so probably a waste of time picking it up, best to get a known good'un.

That's the birdy, so you're sorted on that front then I take it?

I'll one day get back to my little 1300 lump, sounds like yours will be a very nice unit.

Yes mate, both gearbox mounts are ready to be mutated into one usable item.

You are right, it should be a tasty little motor, a similar set up has known to have made 108bhp, couple that to the short geared GT box and fast revving crossflow engine then i really wouldn't be suprised if it wasn't a million miles away from the performance of a Mk1 1800 8v gti :)
