today, in a moment of motorsport inspired madness, i cut the spare wheel well out of my mk1. i want to rivet a sheet of aluminium over the hole thats now there, but is this road legal? i see graham vanstone's mk1 has this type of thing done, is his car mot'd?

no worries, have a look under the motor before you do it, the well is part of the crossmember at the front, so you need to kind of miss a bit out, but cut it lower down so you dont need to weld it back up.

That Blue/White Vw motorsport logoed mk1 with all the fibre glass bits (cant rememebr the guys name...) has the same, pop-riveted ally sheet over the hole.

I would do the same but my spare wheel is there.... :p

Did u have to make up a bracket to hold the rear pannel in place. Cut mine out when I started seam welding the shell, Spot weld drill makes light work of it.

Hi Just had my spare wheel tray cut out due to rust, new sheet steel welded into place and then i am going to rivet a sheet of stainless steel over the top to finish it off.
The only bit you have to be careful with is at the back of the spare wheel tray that fits to the bulkhead..
