recently fitted new shocks and while doing so realised that the front shocks needed a metal washer which sit between the spring plate and the shock which we didn’t have.

On the diagrams it’s numbered 11 and the part number is 171 412 369

Just wanted to check to see how important this part is as we didn’t have it and hearing a rattle on the fronts.

Also didn’t have the log nut tool to tighten it all together but was able to improvise.

    Any ideas?

    It's just a regular washer.
Re tightening the nut, I usually used to use a circlip pliers to wind it home, then tap it around tight with a hammer and blunt chisel.
    Not ideal, but effective.

Is it important to have the washer on and could it be making the knocking noise?

I always fit it, so I can't comment. VW usually don't put stuff like that on without reason.
