Now that we have a bit of decent weather I thought I would give the 16v a once over before going to the Nurburgring in August.

I don't need to change the engine oil/filter just yet so I'm looking at other things. Air filter, HT leads, spark plugs, fuel filter etc.

What plugs would anyone recommend - are triple electrode ones worth using?

Where is the fuel filter on a Mk2 16v? [:$]

What else should I be looking at checking/renewing? The car is in general good health but I want to give it a thorough check over and then maybe take it for a tune up at Stealth :)

    Cheers for any help. [:D]

the fuel filter is located under the vehicle towards to rear of the car inline with the fuel pipes

Hmm, still okay on that front I think. Last one was just before I bought the car about 20k miles ago. How often are you supposed to change them? :)

Cool cheers, I'll have a look. I take it you can buy replacement ones at GSF or ECP etc? Are they easy to change, I've only ever done those little in-line fuel filters before on other cars. [:$]

Did the brake fluid in the last few months, coolant change is a good idea though. [:D]

I had the gearbox oil changed about 6 months ago due to a crunchy 2nd gear, made it worse to be honest! Might do it again but use Redline MTL or similar this time, used 'normal' EP90 or whatever it's called last time as couldn't get hold of Redline in time. [:s]

What about check wheel bearings if you're giving them a pounding round the twisties. Check electrics so car don't catch fire like another ...

Revokev's Ibiza went up in a ball of flames and IIRC it was traced back to electrics.

Thermostat and fan switch. Especially if you don't know when they were last changed but may as well do them anyway with the coolant seeing as they're so cheap.

Plugs and leads from VAG - they are cheaper than most places, and they will make your engine run better.

I always change my cam belt before going over to Germany, change the tensioner on every 2nd cam belt change too, as i've had one seize in the past.

Just thinking, as there's quite a few mk2 16v's going this year, be a good idea if we took a few spares between us but not all take the same stuff if you know what I mean ;)

    Things like :

    RHD clutch cable
RHD accelerator cable ( these bits, you can't get in Germany)
    alt/PAS belts
    16v distributor (i've got one)
    front and rear pads
    exhaust hangers..

Same goes for tools,I always take a few bits and pieces.

Sod's law is the stuff you take you won't need, but you never know...

Gary - good plan about the spares, I'll see what I've got lying around that I can take with me. Also might be worth making a list of tools and other supplies people are taking... I'll have my trusty socket set and swiss-army penknife amongst other things! :p

I'll be taking all my normal gear for trackdays plus extra spares that are not normally needed for both the golf and the range rover

If (god forbid) anything bad happens i can bring the damaged car back on the trailer - but whoever will have to drive my car back and help out with the fuel!!
