    Hi all,

I'm in the throes of planning and performing my 16v > 24v Mk2 project and looking at the power steeering currently.

I plan on using the original Mk2 power steering and rectangular reservoir set up which came on the car but not sure what pump I should use? This is mainly because I have seen different fluids should be used on different years of car...

    So my two questions are:

1 - What component dictates the fluid used, is it the pump or the rack?

2 - Will I need different connections for the 24v pump or should I use a 12v pump?

    Thanks in advance [:D]

    Tom

    1. the rack, so use whatever fluid the mk2 system was runnign before. or refurb it all with new seals and you canuse either fluid type

    2. the mk4 one will work, use a mk3 pressure line and its straight fit, or unscrew the pipe fitting and fit a mk2 one for the mk2 pressure line to seal properly. that being said I had no problem fitting a mk2 line into a mk3 pump, but some have found it can leak. my pipes are all refurbed with new seals.

another thing you may find you need a mk3 vr6 pressure line for a decent fit on a mk4 2.8?

Depends on what engine you have ie mk4 or mk5
If it's a mk4 4motion or mk4 R32 it's just a mater of connecting the hoses the power stearing pump the mk4 has a banjo so you may have to adapted that
Ian would know more about that

If it's a mk5 engine you will need to get the bracket and ancillarys off a 4motion
That's what both me an Ian did with the mk5 r32 engines
You can use the mk5 alternator if you grind a bit of clearance on the bracket

Thanks for the welcome, I'm hope to start a project thread over the xmas period

I should have said, the engine is a BDE so is a Mk4 4mo.
Looks like I'll need a mk3 vr6 pressure line to be safe, thanks for the quick and well detailed response!

I'm glad this has come up, I'm seriously considering dropping a bde into a mk2 on my next one and this can all go in the research folder.

Guy on facebook was saying there were 2 types of mk4 golf pump early and late, the early is ok with a mk3 line and late it doesn't fit? not sure how true that is but could explain for why some need to swap and some dont

i have seen two different pumps but couldnt honestly say why it still wouldnt work as the only difference i could see in the pumps was the low pressure side had a removeable outlet but still exited in the same direction and the high pressure was in the same place with the same fittings

I use a Mk3 VR6 pump and lines with a Mk5 R32 engine but I had to swap the accessory (alternator) bracket for one from a Mk4 R32

Think the mk3 pump is very similar to the mk4 one

Quite often hear people killing the ones in R32's after too much fun in the snow lol
Note to one self constant high rpm is not good for ones power steering pump
