Hi guys, I'm about to replace all the vacuum hoses on my 89 MK2 Digi 8V. Am I right in assuming the hose I need is 3mm internal diameter? Also is there any reason I should get the standard braided type, as I quite fancy red silicone to jazz up the bay a little.

I'm hoping 3 meters should give me plenty of either type of hose, I've read that doing the clear pipes to the air box is also worthwhile? Are they clear for a reason though? I'm about to go through rubjohnnys guide to tuning hence the new lines so I want to get it right as I'm new to golfs!!

Any help/advice is always appreciated!! :)
    Thanks

i think 3 metres would be very overkill. 1m should do it

two nipples on the TB get blanked. one goes to the fuel pressure reg and the other goes to the air box

Depends whether you're really replacing 'all the vac hoses' or just the rubber bits that join them together. It's normally the rubber bits that go porous, but if the clear capilliary pipe is damaged, you might need to sort that too.

Would this stuff be suitable? I called VW this morning and he said oh we have some universal stuff we use for 9.25 + vat per mtr from the way he said it it didnt sound like proper vw stuff..seems a bit pricey so had a look on fleabay. I can prob get cheaper from my local guy but I thought as this was stating competiton use it might be better? Dont want to buy rubbish that will crumble after a few months..

So if my clear pipe is damged I can replace it with the same braided stuff, in which case two meters? Thanks

    I've got some genuine braided rubber stuff here, N 020 353 27.
Bore 3.5mm, wall thickness 2mm. In a fetching shade of 'dark black'.

Only got about 1.5m left, but you can have as much or as little of it as you like at 5/m pro-rata. (What I paid for it via a special deal from a forum member).

It's nice stuff, grips better on the stubs than stuff I've had from elsewhere, and looks the part, for obvious reasons.

For the long clear pipes, they come opaque/whitish if you buy genuine now, so I guess there wasn't any particular reason for them being clear. On my Driver there are clips that some of it goes into on the outside of the airbox, so replacing with braided rubber wouldn't be as neat, 'cos it won't fit the clips; not sure if GTis have similar 'clippage'.

Bringing an old post back from the dead!

I'm going to follow RubJohnny's tuning guide and need new vacuum hoses, but why are silicone hoses bad? Surely a hose is a hose?
As long as air doesn't escape surely it shouldn't be a problem?

Does anybody know what I should do with this? The Haynes is useless when it comes to vacuum lines...:thumbd:

factory it would have a green cap on the end, but a length of hose with a screw in it would do! you sometimes see like a metal rivet in the end on the capped off throttle body vac lines
