A friend of a friend has bought a decent condition mk2 8v but the clutch had gone due to
oil contamination - apparently they have a renowned breather problem which causes this?

I've never heard of this failure diagnosis but I'm more mk1 biased to be fair.

Any ideas if this true and if there is a cure?

    Thanks in advance

breather goes the opposite direction. maybe someone found it to be blocked, which had forced oil out the crank seal. id expect it wuold have popped the dip stick out first though

so check if the breather is blocked, then put a new oil seal in when the clutch is being changed.
