I have a MK2 golf GT 16v I have had for over 20 years time has come for it to go, this car was a 91 run out model with a lot of extras one of them being an electric sunroof, trying to get what I can by selling a few bits off it before I sell it as a unit. Wanting an idea of value I do know these are rare and would fetch good money back in the day, but not a clue about value nowadays any constructive input on value would be really appreciated
Interesting, I’ve never seen that before. Is it basically just a motor that sits where the manual winder crank is normally?
It’s a shame to start stripping off the special parts before selling it, surely having all the run out parts makes it more desirable/££ than a stripped out car someone is going to struggle to find replacements for?
The one you've pictured was from Electric-Life, there was at least one other maker called ElectricSky. Both just added a motor to the existing manual gearing. Read previously claims that the Electric-Life version (re-branded Votex) was available via VW dealers as an accessory, but haven't ever seen anything to confirm that. GTi-Engineering marketed them (the below is from their 1990 catalogue), so you see what they cost to supply and fit back then.
Interesting that Electric-Life made sunroof motors. My early 91reg has Electric-Life windows. I assume they were a dealer fit accessory. They differ from the usual cable regulators having a spring wrapped cable which meshes with the cog and raises/lowers the window.
what you describe is the early style electric life kit, later kits have the same closed loop cable design as the originals (and much better IMO) they were good kits too using bosch motors and quality regulators. these days quality is more hit and miss but you can still get good stuff
Wow I didn't expect so much detailed information. I've only ever seen about two other cars with one fitted guess we can say quite rare ?
Assuming the headlining will have been cut to accept the motor, keep in mind that you will be almost 200 quid for a headliner, however much for a good used cover for the interior light to clip into, maybe a new gear block thing if the electric one does away with it, and a new handle. So you might be in for about 300 quid just to put it back to standard. Can't see the electric setup selling for more than that so I'd probably just leave it in as a selling point
The Electric-Life version fits straight on if done correctly, no cutting the head cloth and the attachment points use existing holes in the roof brace. The existing VW gearing block is removed to be directly replaced by the same profiled cog of the new motor. The cover has spring clips at the front that hold it in the same way that the standard covers do, the rear has a screw either side that line up with others in the shaped bracket you can see in one of the images Plug'n'play, and completely reversible if you keep the swapped out parts.
The 2 pictured look to have a far bigger opening than standard, even the cover is miles bigger. On the OPs image you can see the ragged edges of the headliner board.
Can't comment on how the OP's was fitted and Matt Golfs is a different Audi 80 mechanism with his own hand made cover, but can confirm that if done correctly no cutting etc. is needed. https://www.clubgti.com/forums/inde...2-mk2-golf-gti-8v.291869/page-13#post-2516556
Definitely no cutting of the headlining involved with the one fitted to mine. This is up for sale if anyone is interested along with a set of electric mirrors with loom and switch
