Looking at upgrading my j reg mk2 8v gti brakes
    Looking at the easiest option

Will 280mm be just a caliper and carriers
Or is it a hub upgrade and cylinder too

Still want to use 4 stud

    Or are 16v brakes diffrant

Your 8v will have 239mm brakes on it you will need to upgrade to late 16v hubs to fit the 280mm calipers and carriers

yep, 16v 256mm or g60 280mm use the same hubs so you will need to replace them either way. Plus the MC.

To get newer brakes than old mk2 Stuff you can use Seat Ibiza Cupra 280s as well.

Hubs need changing whatever you do.

Are you planning a power upgrade,if not a full stock replacement of disks, pads and calipers rebuilt will supply all the stopping power you need, big brakes in a light car can cause lock-up,not something you want on a rainy day.

256&280mm brakes are stock in 16v and g60 Golfs. You can use Passat B3/4 parts also - they are the same.

Do the Cupra 280's fit the 16v hubs then ? The 280's
on my MK2 are fooked, some I could do with something newer.

Yep, that's what I had on my mk2 with 16v hubs, I got a set of Cupra 280s from someone who was upgrading to Brembo 305s.

Early MK3 GTI's 280mm calipers - same as G60 but without the scene tax.

if you change to bigger brakes, get the MC changed otherwise you will have a lot of brake pedal travel.

G60 and mk3 are different calipers. Both 280 and both girling/lucas 54s but g60 caliper much deeper to accommodate thicker pads that's the only difference.

To 04/1996 Mk3 use same calipers and pads as G60, from 05/1996 updated:

Difference in "depth" you talking about is between calipers for 256 and 280mm discs:

Approved and you are correct.
Rallye/Golf G60s and Golf 3 GTIs up to 1996 used 25mm discs and so used the wider Lucas 54 calipers.
The 19/1G 16v Golfs used 22mm Discs and used the narrower Lucas 54 caliper.

I knew I was right in some way. I remember when I bought recon units at motor factors I was confused why I could get them to fit over pads n discs as they gave me narrower calipers and then got the correct ones. Are the pads not thicker too? Must delve back into this. So are you saying my sitbiza tdi mk3 4IV17 0UP stud has g60 brakes?
