Hi Everyone. My son has a 1998 golf mk3 gti 8v and the fuel gauge has ceased to work anymore. I have been told it could be the fuel tank sender unit, but before he pays out for a new one I was wondering if there may be anything else to check first. Any help or ideas will be appreciated. Many thanks in advance. Ian
unplug it and bridge the purple/black wire to brown/black first (the 2 smaller pins) then switch on the ignition and gauge should go to full. if it does its the sender, if not its the wiring or cluster
Hi John. Thanks for your reply, I will do what you have described and hopefully will get it sorted. Cheers Ian
Hi Everyone. The fuel gauge is still not working. I have bridged the sender connector and changed the clocks, still nothing. Could anyone shed any light on how to check the wiring to try and pin point the problem may be. Many thanks. Cheers Ian
When you bridged the sender connector - this was the wiring going back towards the cars fusebox? What did the gauge do if anything?
I bridged the purple/black wire to the brown/black wire, turned the ignition on but nothing happened to the gauge. Cheers Ian
I'll take a look through the wiring diagrams after some food and see if I can locate the wires you need to trace to fusebox and fuse box to cluster
look at plug M pin 3 to start with, purple/black wire. poke a loop of spare wire into it to one of the other brown wires (M/6 would do) and try again. if the gauge goes up then its the wire to the sender at fault, if not look at the clock wires next: http://www.clubgti.com/showthread.php?219775
Hi John. Many thanks for your reply and sharing your knowledge. This is an extremely helpful link you have put on here, I will let you know how I get on. Cheers Ian
Sorry mate - didn't get a chance last night. Here is another link similar to Jonnys http://www.a2resource.com/electrical/CE2.html As he has also referred to check on the fusebox side plugs M3 and K11 (earth) M/03 Fuel Gauge Sending Unit Fuel Gauge Violet/Black and K/11 Fuel Gauge Ground (1990-92 A2 only), Rear Spoiler Control Unit Ground (Corrado), Rear Ashtray Light Ground (Passat, A3), Interior Lights (A3), Sunroof (some models), Rear Ashtray Light, Chassis Ground Main Fusebox Ground Brown/Blue (A2), Brown/White (Corrado) Do some continuity checks from fuel pump end to fusebox to ensure cabling is ok. You could always try to bridge cabling at fusebox side to get the fuel gauge to show full as mentioned in previous post. If no luck there - check wiring going to clocks - colour of wire will be white not Blue as suggested on wiring diagrams. U1/12 Gauge Cluster Fuel Gauge Fuel Gauge Sending Unit Blue
Hi Aminder. No apology necessary, I appreciate you giving your time to help me out to resolve this problem. As with Jonny I will let you know what the problem was when I have sorted it. Many thanks. Ian
I would go straight for the sender as it has a pathetically thin spring which forms part of the circuit that is prone to fail. Especially with a bit of corrosion on it.
