Not sure if this is the corect place to put this but...

I have bought a Mk3 Golf Gti, the current owner has lost the keys and the car is locked. The first problem I have is getting into the car to move it to my garage. The next will be the steering lock!

Does anyone have any tips on the best way to get into the car? PM would be best.

Once the car is in my garage I'll need new door locks, keys and ignition barrel. How do I go about coding the keys to the ECU? Can it be done via Vagcom or similar?

    Many thanks

Am I being nieve but wouldn't VW have the key numbers stored on some old computer somewhere. Buy new keys and then no problem.

if they dont the number is on the locks
and getting in should not be a problem as mk3 are easy to get in to and if all else fails you could lock smith will get in
and that would just leave the immobiliser to sort

It is for a 60k miler with 10 months MOT for 450

Will the key work with the immobiliser or will that have to be programmed?

If it has an imobiliser, then no the key wont work with it. You'll have to take the car to VAG to get the key coded :(
what year is it, and what engine, 8v or 16v?

Its a 16v, 1997. Can the key not be coded using Vag Tacho as I have access to it?

not unless you have a matched key in the ignition, vag-tacho will just tell you 'access denied' I have a big pile of useless transponders that I have tried

luckily, since its an ABF you can fit a non-immobilised ECU from a 95 model year. The only issue is you'll have to trim off some locking tabs on the ECU or ECU plug to get it to fit. apart from that the ECU will work just the same

^ thats what i would do. Its obvious when you put the two different ecu's together the little extra bit of plastic that will 'stop' them going together. It will save any headache further down the road too

I have a non immobilised ECU in the shed for another project I have planned. I'll try that and go from there.

Many thanks for the useful replies
