I am searching for some mk4 calipers (happy to get mk3) but the ones I see have a spring on the outside. Yet I keep reading threads about not having calipers with the springs.
So I am a little spring confused so some simple help appreciated please, as I have spent evenings reading the same stuff !!!
Surely it needs the spring to return the handbrake.
All I know is my head is all Fuzzy and I need to get this sorted
    Thanks for your time people

some do have external helper springs, same goes for mk3 era. if they're made of alloy then you have mk4 era ones, come in 36, 38 and 40mm piston. 38mm would match post-88 mkj2, 36 pre-88 mk2. 40mm are a little bigger, probably be ok but even 36 are way over-size for the braking force actually required at the rear hence bias valve used to knobble them

if buying new I'd go mk3 then you can use standard flexi lines, mk4 means also using conversion hoses at the back and there is no real advantage mk4 calipers over mk3 other than weight
