A buyers guide to the mk4 golf

hello, does such a thing exist?

if not any do's or don'ts? We are looking at all petrol variants.

I know the water pumps are prone to cracking, is this just on the GTI?

    many thanks

There is a Mk4 owners forum you could look at Google it.

My advice for dos and donts would be DONT!

    Comfy but dull.

Correct about the water pumps and the front anti rollbar needs replacing quite early. Central locking packs up. Interior pretty prone to wear.

if going petrol, avoid the 2.0. Get either the V5, 1.8T or the V6.

They are great daily cars, any reason for getting petrol? i would be looking at a 130gt tdi if it was me

yes the 2.0 gti is dull dont know why it was ever a gti
    V5, 1.8T or the V6:thumbup:
the gt tdi are very good

    i have both a v6 4motion and 115 gt tdi
things to look out for suspension bushes and anti rollbar drop links ie suspension knocking

the exhausts last well but the brackets do tend to brake off

look for rust round the lock on the tail gate

the mk4 has no roof guter so look out for water leaks at the door seals

the tdi can have problems with the vnt turbo's vanes sticking and ever over or under boosting and going into limp mode
and you must use the right oil in the tdi

good strong cars not much go's wrong with them but there are plenty bad one's so
have a good look and buy the best one you can get

There's lots of bad apples out there, but my mk4 hasn't missed a beat. Only things so far i needed to change was the MAF and front bushes. Otherwise when I got the cambelt done I got the metal impellar waterpump.

I've got the 1.8T and its a great daily car; i've got the leather recaro's which are ace too!

i just bought a mk4 and here are my conclusions (well it was my cuzin's car so i know a bit from him)..

    *waterpump failures
    *MAF (this is common problems)
*coil packs (ooo yes they do fail...)
*if you are thinking about changing the suspensions, then may be invest a bit more and replace ALL the bushes to polyurethene ones.

but generally keep a good habit of warming the engine, say at least drive after the revs settle down from 1200 to 900 and also when switching off, do let it run for a minute or so to help the turbo to settle down as from high revs to normal.

to summarise 1.8 T is a great engine. mine is 91000 mile and it doesnt burn oil at all (touch wood)

    cheers
