Right then, my Mk4 has recently hit 100,000 miles, so it’s time to give it a complete overhaul, changing all the tired parts.

So far, I have listed a few things I want to change on it. These will all be genuine parts from VW to.

    Here goes –

    Engine.

    • New cam belt & Aux belt.
    • Both cam belt tensioners and alternator tensioner
    • Water pump
    • Coolant flush and new coolant added
    • New air panel filter (Jetex one has been in there for 3 years now!)
    • Fuel filter
    • Brake fluid change
    • Pollen filter

    Body.

    • Front ARB bushes (wishbone bushes already changed)
    • Rear beam bushes
    • Exhaust gaskets
    • My rear discs and pads need changing

Just wondering if anyone can recommend anything ive overlooked which would be worth changing.

    Cheers. Rich.

I wouldn't bother changing any exhaust gaskets unless they're leaking. I'd add brake fluid change to the list though

Edit, fuel filter as well if you haven't fairly recently

    Nice one Dan.

Just added the fuel filter and brake fluid change to the list

I'll get them to look at the exhaust, as im sure its blowing slightly from somewhere. Im not sure if its blowing from the turbo to downpipe gasket, or there abouts.

Gearbox oil change, front and rear top mounts, fabia vrs beam bushes are supposed to be a good upgrade without the harshness of polybushes

Gearbox oil was changed just before i bought it.

Top mounts could be a possibility if they are worn.

Will look into the Fabia beam bushes to.

How comes people use these ? Are they just harder wearing compared to standard ?

if your changing the brake fluid check for leaks in any of the brake line joins before draining the old fluid, worth a check saves time in the future also maybe worth upgrading to the goodridge braided lines nice little upgrade imo

Should be no need to change a 3 year old aftermarket panel filter unless it's damaged

itll be crap as it wont filter properly and will be blocked now anyway, get a proper paper one.

also. pas fluid. doubt thats ever been done.

also id be tempted to drop the sump and sort out the oil pick up

Yea sump was dropped and the pick up pipe was removed and cleaned thoroughly

Oil and filter has been changed every 6 months after this to.

Ben,cheers for posting the cleaning process for the Jetex filters.
I may actually do this. Will have a look at how dirty it is first.

Matt - pas fluid has never been changed so I might actually do this.

    How's yours / Rach's mk4 treating you lately ?

Their basiclly the same as the Cupra R ones but don't have the high price tag, they help tighten up the handling but being oem don't give the harshness that poly bushes can, being firmer I imagine they'd last longer google them and see how many people have fitted them on the UKMKIV's forum planning on fitting them to my fiancee's bora when we refresh the suspension

Regarding the cambelt, ive seen a Dayco cambelt kit for a good price.

Are these good quality compared to the genuine ones ?

    :)

Richard, it is good to check the condition of the oil pipes to and from the turbine, and the condition of the turbine.
