Righty, blo ody mk5 2.0 FSI I just picked up has the dreaded ABS module failure. ESP can't be turned off, ABS light on, steering light on etc etc. Is there a way of repairing the ABS unit without buying a hit-or-miss repair pack from VW? I've seen a few dodgy vids of people doing some pretty poor soldering attempts but has anyone done it on here? My other issue is that VCDS won't pickup most of the controllers when running a scan. I hope its just a cheap lead playing up but do other people have issues with thir cheap leads?
What lead do you have? Is it a can one? Mk5's need a can lead. The ones I have have never given me problems.
Is it a known common fault on the ABS module, that the repair kit is guaranteed to fix if implemented well? If so, doing a decent job of swapping over some SMD components would be no problem at my work if you need someone to do it. Yeah some cheap VCDS interfaces can be hit and miss I think. I'm far from an expert on VCDS because I've simply never used it all that much except occasional use on our cars, but I actually had to modify my cheapy interface before it would work with the Corrado's engine ECU.
As above mk5 needs a 'can' cable. These Ate mk60 ABS pumps can be repaired by BBA reman and Ecu testing ltd. Also a repair kit from VAG for them too.
BBA Reman repaired our Audi`s ABS module (broken internal connection) for < 200, good service - quick turnaround - warranty
Hmm broken internal connection is it, right, wheres my spanners! I've picked up a used unit this morning and will strip the old one down for a look inside. As for the cable, I've no idea if it's a 'can' or not. How 'can' ( < see whay I did there lol) I tell what it is?
Vw normally honour a replacement control unit under goodwill, have you tried calling customer services?
The blue cheap cables are 'k-line' only and don't support 'can' based mk5 on cars. Generally the fault with these Ate MK60 ABS pumps is the brake pressure sensor . Happens on Fords,VWs,BMWs...
After my call to them today I've lost all faith in rip-off dealers lol Yeah I have a cheapo cable , may have sorted a replacement Gary, have you ever had a go stripping one down?
No mate, generally I've either sent them off for repair or they have been replaced under warranty so the old unit has been returned. Diagnosed one on a Focus recently, the Ford price is 1400 + vat!! When was at VW they were just starting to play up on mk5s, the VW test plan just said, press brake pedal to test the brake switch was sending signal to ABS then if it was just said to replace the module!
The VW price was up there at one point, shocking lol I'll see what this used unit is like I've bought and strip the old one down. If it's a broken joint and repairable I'll get some pics up showing it. If it's not, nothing lost
Took it off and stripped the module off the pump today. Fair bit of corrosion on the bases of the magnetic units( if that's what they are) but no sign of any damage to the circuit board. As this isn't a passat setup the circuit board doesn't suffer from the common wiring failure of the small fine wires from board to multiplug pins. This is the pressure sensor failure in the main hydraulic block. Ill strip that down this week
Aye, it's brake pressure sensor that plays up on most if not all of them with the mk60 pump, some BMWs have them seperate to the pump which makes life easier.
I've replaced 1 it's a piece of **** and cost me about 400 for a new pump a few years ago . Took about an hour to swap then a bleed Vw wanted 1800 drive in drive out and Tps wanted over 900 for the part . Funny thing was the dealer said it took their fitters all day lol
yep, ive seen this honoured 3 times in the last 6 months with people just paying for the initial diagnostics
Its a very common fault, and if goodwill is being still offered on them, there must be a TSB or field service action, campaign (or whatever VW call them)
Fingers crossed for you . I would of had more luck trying to find a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow . Then my dealer doing that
Had a chat with my local franchise and they won't honour the repair and actually said they hadn't had many failures lol Or maybe people are avoiding them for another reason! Sinspeed and a few others do the mod where the pressure sensor is on the outside. Shame the manufacturer diddo a recall as surely it's a safety issue with so many failing with a far to common problem.
