Hi guys. I've already got the itch to start messing with the Mk7, and im thinking of upgrading the air filter on my Mk7 Golf GTI Performance.

I've been looking at a few examples, some people have opted for a direct panel filter replacement, others have removed the air box completely to fit a full cold air induction kit.

    What would people recommend ?

Preferably I would like a little more induction noise, so maybe a direct panel filter replacement might not be worth it. But I also don't want to suffer from heat soak.

I do like the look of the Injen intakes. Comes with a mount, and an enclosed section to keep heat away which looks really neat.

    Seen here -

A direct panel filter replacement looks good for the money -

But in all honesty I do like a bit of noise.

So has anyone opted for an intake on their Mk7's, or even Mk6 GTI's ?

Also this is a good read -

Shows how restrictive the standard air intake is !!

    Cheers.

I had this setup on my old Mk4 which proved to be good, and made a great noise too ;)

Thing is, I don't really want to butcher the standard air box just yet. And I want rid of the restrictive intake pipe. ;)

standard one looks good for over 400bhp ;)

guessing they made it like that to stop all the crud of the day getting sucked in
    plus keeps the noise down

a few like this being sold

    intake_mqb_installed_golfr.jpg

this one could be easily made

I was thinking the same too about cutting the grills.

But as its a new car I don't want to start butchering it just yet. Something bolt on bolt off would be best.

I've seen a few air boxes for sale. Maybe might be worth modifying one ?

I do like that a lot Paul, but like you said, a little pricey

Been thinking on having my own pipe made up and adding a RamAir filter on the end. Took some measurements earlier, so I might consider making my own. ;)

Looking through the net, there seem to be two variations of air box !

    * Some GTI modes seem to have an SAI (secondary air injection) fitted, which means when you buy your induction kit, you've got to make sure it accommodates this pipe.

You can see it here -

    * Mine hasn't got it luckily, just a small vacuum pipe going to the box. As seen here -

Looks like a nice bit of kit that

I did come across this yesterday, but its the 300 price tag that puts me off. :(
In all fairness I suppose it does come with the heat shield and the mount, but it needs to be cheaper IMO.

The Injen intake caught my eye as it looks very well made, and is cheaper then the rivals, but again, is the filter any good ?

I'm not going to rush into anything just yet. Going to see whats around first and see what options are out there. Even some home brewed ones would be worth looking at

Hard question...These kits you are looking at, do you realise the engine with its factory calibration is already compensated for for the very small pressure drop from air filtration and the 'dirty side air duct'?
I also pretty much doubt you will achieve any improvement in driveability with some aftermarket filter. In addition such fittings will void your warranty.
If you want to do this as you are after 'the look' then fair enough. For performance on the stock calibration, not worth it.
Pretty fast as it out the box when driven properly.

    You car though.

I'll take that all onboard Ed mate ;)

Its not really the "look" I'm trying to achieve. Any gains achieved from removing the stock airbox would be a bonus, but I could do with a little more noise.

Also, as its an easy bolt on bolt off modification, its easily swapped for when it goes into the dealers. ;)

There is a spare standard airbox for sale on eBay at the moment. Was thinking of maybe buying this, modifying it and adding a RamAir / Pipercross panel filter ?

As said, I'm not going to rush into anything just yet. Going to see what options are available first.

    That's true Ian.

I've used them loads in the past. Basically my Mk2's engine bay is full of Ash hoses and boost pipes ;)

Well, I've gone for the Pipercross filter in the end.

I did order a RamAir one, but the dimensions are bigger, but there add stated it would fit a Mk7 GTI, so got a full refund.

Went for the Pipercross panel filter instead.

Tempted to buy another air box and modify it. We'll see though.

My Mk4 with a modified airbox, Jetex panel filter and cold air pipe sounded awesome.

    Pipercross filter is in

Check out the difference between the two ;)

Now, as for gains, I doubt I've added 100bhp from adding this lol

But, there is a noticeable audible difference from the intake, and the engine seems to be breathing a lot better.

Still thinking of making my own intake for it soon though, but this will do for now.
