As I have had a few issues with the mk3 over the years which I suspect would have be a bit easier to trace / fix with a proper meter. And the issue with the washing machine showed up that my old 12v test light was not really up to the job. I am thinking I need a multi meter.

So is there really much point in spending much more than a few quid on this sort of thing?

If it is just going to be used in and about the house / car? [:s]

If you're going to be using it on 240V for your safety it should meet EN:61010-1 Cat II standards plus decent meters are a bit more tolerant of being used on the wrong range.

I have one of these in my tool kit in my car. Does the job. Just test it on all settings when you receive it! I have a slightly more expensive one at home, but I do a lot of electrical work

Aldi do multimeters for less than a 10'r every now and then (like this, http://www.uploadarchief.net/files/download/dsc04998_cleaned.jpg) . I have 2 of them. 1 at home and 1 at work. Used all the time. They are about 7 years old now and I cant fault them. Comes with leads, rubber housing, battery and thier no quibble 3 year warranty. For two ninety 5 I'll see that one duff before you get it!

as said if you're testing 240v circuits you would want something better, but this one is just perect for automotive work. only thing is maybe the resistance readings could be suspect on cheap wonky stuff but all I ever really used it for was to test open/closed circuits rather than resistance

looks like it would be good enough to go though most fault

I'll agree you can't go much better than a Fluke, I use mine when I can - some times a old fashioned power probe is also a brilliant addition
