early AC/DC when they still had Bon Scott signing, and the next album, back in black are amazing, early bowie really grows on you. stones, who, hendriz zepplin are all excellent places to start, also sabbath when ozzy was still involved, "fairies wear boots, the wizard," etc

some KISS can be ok too, check out Detroit rock city. but some is pretty lame. after 1980 it all went a bit poodle perm.

"I'm dirty, mean and mighty unclean
    I'm a wanted man
    Public enemy number one
    Understand
    So lock up your daughter
    Lock up your wife
    Lock up your back door
    And run for your life
The man is back in town
So don't you mess me 'round"

Not too sure on the eras exactly (I wasn't alive) but a few tracks:

ACDC - You Shook Me All Night Long
    ACDC - Bad Boy Boogie
    ZZ Top - Tush
Kiss - Rock N Roll All Night
    War - Low Rider
    Foghat - Slow Ride
Alice Cooper - Schools Out For Summer
Sweet - Fox On The Run
The Cult - She Sells Sanctuary
    T-Rex - 20th Century Boy
Rainbow - Since You've Been Gone
    Iron Maiden - Self-Titled Album
    The Who - Pinball Wizard
Led Zepellin - Whole Lotta Love

And I ain't too sure about (age wise):

Boston - More Than A Feeling
Billy Joel - We Didn't Start The Fire
BTO - You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet
Dire Straits - Sultans Of Swing
Duran Duran - A View To A Kill
    Europe - The Final Countdown
    Free - All Right Now

    All top songs though.

    If you like The Who you could try a bit of MOD revival;

    The Chords
    The Lambrettas
    Secret Affair
    Merton Parkas
    Purple Hearts

Also at the moment I am well into

    David Bowie
    The Clash
    The Stranglers
    The Specials
Early Madness stuff is top class

    god I love music!!!

    .
    ERR no they're not ;)

Blue Oyster Cult a US band had 1 hit single in 1978 with the classic tune:- (Dont Fear)The Reaper
The Cult were previously known as Southern Death Cult and then Death Cult, and hail from West Yorkshire. Probably their most well known tune was She Sells Sanctuary.
    I'll get my coat ;)

Neil Young is pretty much all you need - spans 50's to 2000's. "Weld" is a good album to start with...... avoid a lot of the new stuff, and if you see a copy of "Trans" in a shop - leave the shop right away, and go home.
