Hi. Many congratulations for the site you have created. Very good info and explanations from technical point of view. I live in Greece and owned a Mk2 Golf on a 20VT AEB engine. Specs of the car are: -20VT AEB engine -Schrick oil pan (modified for turbo) -02S GQP/GLB 6-speed gearbox with a Kaaz lsd inside -Bilstein PSS suspension revalved to circuit spec -Fully adjustable suspension top mounts -Spherical bearings all around -OZ Superleggera 7x17 wheels, 38 offset -Golf 4 front discs and calipers with Goodridge hoses -6 point roll-cage -Circuit spec front wishbones (with no ARB) -VW Motorsport type rear axle -JAZ 28 litres fuel cell Some time ago, i decided to make a proper Berg Cup style work on the suspension structure and wings of the car. At the moment i have finished with the front wishbones and the rear axle. Finally i am able to adjust the rear axle geometry although i have to make new wider rear wheel spacers so that rear wheel track will be close enough to the front one. There is a standard rear ARB. The reason i have not changed it is that in my future plans is the creation of an in-boot adjustable rear anti roll bar similar to the Punto Kit Car one. On the front, the new wider wishbones gave the car 7cm width from each side. The wishbone can be adjusted to 8cm but then the king pin inclination is wrong. The good thing is that caster angle (a great dis in Mk2s) can be adjusted at desirable numbers. As it can be seen a drop pin kit has been welded on standard Mk2’s upright and was a great improvement on feeling of the nose. There is no front ARB. In my future plans are: - a lightweight multipoint roll cage, - 4-pot racing calipers, - 9x17 lightweight wheels so that wide michelin slicks can be fitted More images will follow. Cheers.
Nothing serious. Two bucket seats, a momo steering wheel, 6-point roll cage. Things to be done: -CAE Shifter -Lighweight dashboard. Does anyone know where to search for one?
Interesting work on the suspension - well done. Have you made a plan for the fuel tank? It might be an idea to post full size pictures - sometimes too many thumbnails can be a pain to work through.
Thanx Chris. What i was thinking about the fuel cell is the following... It's a JAZ 28 litre in a Honda Civic boot. The alternative is to locate it just behind the co-drivers seat, together withe battery. Any opinions?
Let me sort them - 2 secs Edit, this is how they need to look: http://i562.photobucket.com/albums/ss70/mk2sp/031.jpg[/IMG ] Hovver the mouse over each image you are posting, and then copy the code from the lower box that appears
Cheers mate. Hopefully, in about 15 days, i will start bodywork. Will be difficult withe GFK wings but i found them at a really good price. Would prefer them to be plastic like the Thruston-Jones' black-orange Mk2. Until then, i am in investigation about a lightweight dashboard. Any ideas?
They're not generally available. Some were made a while back in the UK, but to get 10 people together to do another batch would be near impossible.
Yep. I am making both of them tubular. Then i'll test them on track. If the material wont cope with the stresses, i'll try my way for two stronger ones. There is a guy here that makes driveshafts for most rally cars in Greece. The price is about 300 euros and unless you are on gravel or have 1000ps they last forever. Sounds good for me...
These past days i have started to test wide-arches on the front of the car. At the moment the car runs on 17x7 205/40/17 wheels and seems that they do not touch the arches at all. I am pretty stressed, as my plan is to run on 17x9 235-610/17 wheels. My garage-mate says he will trim things out and will be ok.. From my calculations, even if the wheel will be 40+ offset, modifications on existing wings will be needed. I have called Xsport Racing and they told me that they make arches for 17x9 wheels like the ones on Thruston-Jone's Mk2. Sounds just fine but will cost 400pounds! And i already have bought the ones i got for 350...[:^(] Things are much better at the rear as there is enough space for 17x9 wheels. Picture of front and rear arches vs Thruston-Jone's Mk2 (which runs 17x9) below... Bodywork will start end of next week and will post images when it will be finished.
A friend of mine made the wishbones in his machine-shop. I chose the shape (geometry characteristics) and dimensions.
Finally finished with the bodywork. Some images below. I hope you like it as i did... Things to do... - waiting for ATS DTC 17x9 wheels to fit - Buy an OMP ChMol Roll Cage - Strip out the front half interior and make the car lighter - Connect the OEM Mk2 Digital Dash to the AEB ECU - Manufacture a side excaust (driver side)
looking good Only thing i am not 100% sure about is the bumpers/type though not sure what the other mk2 options are? Might just be the black on them that sticks out but some cracking work on her so far. still love it
