As title my mk1 cabby will be turning 40 years old early next year.im hoping it will be exempt from tax and mot,s although I'd more than likely still have an annual check anyway.my only concern is how original does a car need to be for exemption purposes.i did change my engine 3 years ago from a 1600eg to a 1800ev would this make a difference.
It still has the eg on the logbook never bothered updating it.

Engine change affects the exemption status but according to the DVLA shouldn't be an issue since it's still 'alternative original equipment' ..ish?

So looks like should be good! Best to check the actual dates though - I was hoping my mini would be exempt this year (It's a 1981 model) but have to wait until next year until it's tax/MOT exempt for real...

As above that won't make any difference as if it's like for like then it's fine. So 4 cylinder VW engine for 4 cylinder VW engine is all good. If it's massive HP increase it could be an issue but 1600 to 1800 won't be. I'd imagine 1300 to VR6 might be pushing the issue
