Got to drive a new one tonight - 1.9 diesel (that sounds like a tractor.)

Nicely kitted out with all the toys, lots of space and a strange sort of turbo that comes in quite gently (but then seems to disappear the same way as you put your foot down!)

I assume its the same engine as the Golf, but I can see now why you deride it as a 'sensible' family-type car. Pleasant - yes. Comfortable - yes. Economical - apparently.Exciting - definitely not!!

And what does the switch do that says ESP (or EPS) on it? Didn't like to press it, in case I did something awful to someone else's new car

    Extrasensory perception, so I've heard.

You press it and it can tell what drivers that don't indicate etc., are going to do.
    Quite handy..

    Not really :p
Think it's electrical stability protection, or something.
Stops you flying off corners etc..

    lol@ tuff

How does it actually work then?

I didn't try pushing it hard round corners cos it was p!ssing it down with rain, and I'm not used to power steering (always takes me a few miles to get the hang of it again) so I didn't want to put it into a hedge!

ESP works by combining the ABS and the traction control to control the car if any of the wheels start to skid.
