I have been having problems with slow cranking and no firing with my 9a on carbs so was looking around the engine bay for obvious issues. I pulled the leads off the plugs to find oil in one of the wells. Is this just a case of needing a new rocker gasket and could it be causing my starting problems?

most likely rocker gasket yep, if the oil has severely degraded the plug leads enough maybe it could cause starting issues but I wouldn't count on it being that. certainly it wouldn't cause slow cranking anyway

Thanks, I have ordered a new gasket for the rocker, hopefully that will cure it. Just need to find the slow cranking problem still! Tried starting it with a jump lead on one of the starter bolts and the other end on the battery negative to rule out bad earth and was still slow cranking. Battery is brand new. Is it worthwhile upgrading to diesel starter? Looks like a minefield of brands out there too

It seems mk3 020 planetary starter is the way forward for an upgrade, do you know the part numbers for this, there seems like a few options

not sure about that one, it says it fits mk3 1.4, as well as 1.8/2.0 8v and also abf. all 3 of these models use different starters...

Right so after some research I have come up with these part numbers:

    020911023H
    020911023S
    020911023T

Can anyone confirm they are right? Thanks!

H and T don't show in ETKA so not sure what they are for originally. Both H & T are superceeded with F. S is only listed for MK4 Golf with 1.4l engines, those do run 020 box but modified to fit small block. the starter may still work though?

F is listed for MK1-4, so a '1 size fits all' it seems, will likely have mk3/4 plug on it and you just have to modify your mk1/2 with the right plug to use it or pull spade from plastic housing and plug it right in

main thing when shopping for starters is make sure its mk2/3 version with all 3 holes in the flange as you need the 3rd one for the front bracket. the original mk1 motors only have the 2 main holes
