    Good Morning,

    Golf GTI MK2 1987 E Reg Digifant.

I have now noticed a couple of times in car park at work that I am getting an oil leak between the gearbox and the engine. I now have a small patch of oil under my car.

Any suggestions for what it could be? From what I have seen/touched, it seems to be engine oil, although I know if gearbox oil is getting on a bit it will turn more brown than red too.

    Thanks,

    Jack.

Doesn't sound good is the clutch ok? If clutch ok probably crank seal[8(] gearbox out flywheel off and replace seal:thumbup:
If clutch slipping then gearbox out check shaft for play might just need bush and seal[:s] but clutch plate might be ko'd
Either way looks like the box needs to come off :(

Just thought could be a small chance it's the sump seal at the crank end but this is usually confused with end seal leak

Just make sure you have a really good look all around the top of the bell housing as oil can run down from the top in really difficult to see places look look and look again as you don't want to pull the box and find it was from above the box [:x]

I have checked the leak over, it is definatly engine oil. It is not coming from the top of the bell housing, it is definatly coming from underneath. It has been around about 5 hours since the car was parked up and it still has a drip of oil coming off of it.

Sounds like it's the crank seal then:(
If you check out Nige's post so where in the middle is a crank seal replacement looks relatively easy

WHATEVER YOU DO DONT USE THE BOLT ON THE FRONT PULLEY TO STOP CRANK WHEN UNDOING FLYWHEEL !!!!!!![:x]

Can cause lots of problems if you loosen it !!!!!!

Yes rear main oil seal i`d say!

You can use a flywheel locking tool to hold flywheel only about 8, i always use one!
