So who knows anything about them? It appears (I hope) that I may just have got myself a bargain. Was perusing ebay as you do, and came across some OZ motorsport wheels from a subaru. They were going for very little, so I bought them. This was over a month ago, and I have only just got them the weekend just gone after Tubthumped collected them for me and stored them in his garage. I had a better look at them at lunchtime, and they definitely arent subaru wheels, well I dont think so because of the offset - the advert said ET55, but they are actually ET47. Anyway, they are 5x100, 7*17 rims, and in need of a refurb, was thinking of anthracite, dont think I like white..... here they are anyway and this is what they should look like and on a rallye According to an advert for some similar wheels for an escort cossie, they are made from Magnesium, and would have cost something like 350ea. What I'm wondering at the moment is what they have come off. My thoughts are leading towards Toyota's - specifically the ST205 type rally car and also the Corolla. These are both the same 5*100 stud pattern I cant find a decent pic at the moment, will have a look again later Specifically, I'm thinking anthracite (they're going on an Atlas Grey Jetta), and I may even have the OZ Racing painted back on as well Opinions?
thinking about it, I should measure the centre bore, that would give me a clue as to the origins - I think subaru is 56.1 (VW being 57.1)
Do it!! There the origial Rally wheel and have been fitted to so many different types of rally cars over the years. (this will be a road copy of said wheel) I have Super T's on one of my cars and find them an excellent wheel. I very much doubt there magnesium (the proper rally wheels are) but a mag wheel lasts about 2000-5000 miles! but on the flip side there extremely light. Where there scuffed and scratched, they would react with the air and pretty much fall apart. Up to you dude, but i'd have refurbed back to OEM standard as they are a special design! Pricie
there's what looks like a set of these in the classifieds but 15" and 4stud. As to material i suppose like many wheels it depends on the origins, if they are original rallying wheels they might be a magnesium alloy.
There are 2-3 versions of these about. Proper name of the wheel will come to me. - alloy OZ versions - magnesium OZ versions (not particularly light tbh, designed to bounce off rocks) - Compomotive ?TH? versions, which look similar but are obviously different mfr Some look harder than others, due to the ?mag? versions having part of the alloy outer section protruding beyond the rim (for brake clearance I assume, dovetailed with particular ET)
Yea it is the TH mono. (same as schmidt THs but single piece) think dubmeister sell the compomotive version.
I think the offset is too high to be Toyota, they tend to be ET35. I have a set of original Compo THs in magnesium alloy, and was told by the bloke selling them that the way tell if they are magnesium alloy, at least with the Compos, is that they have what look like veins going down the back of the face of the wheel, following the spokes, if that makes sense? Apparently they were to add strength to the wheel, but weren't done on the normal alloy road version because they didn't need the extra strength. Thats what I was told anyway, so don't take my word for it. Have you had a chance to weigh the wheels, and compare them with a set of regular alloys? My Compos are 6.5x15 and weigh 5kg each without the tyre, my other set of 15s weigh 6.5kg each without the tyre. The weight isn't bad when you consider the amount of metal on the wheel.
They magnesium, and they do tent to crack and generally become unrepareable after a decent stint on a rally car fr example. Be very carefull when buyin mag x rally wheels and check them very closly when you go get them. Those look ok though cause they aint been painted to cover up any damage
just remembered. did vw not have a 15" style of those rims that were badged as 'vw racing' they used them on lupos or something? *edit* just found these ats versions on ebum.de
the VW racing ones used on the polo and lupo are 14" and 15" in 5.5J and 6J widths. theyre OZs aswell you can buy them from VW racing still.
