Painting Engine Parts - Hammerite or Spray can

Hey,

Whats quite good to use to paint engine parts like the Alternator bracket and the Rocker cover,oil cooler etc ect?

Primer and then standard rattle can spray paint
or Hammerite

The Finnish will be better from a spray can. Hammerite comes in spray cans though so need to choose.

 

hammerite isnt good for anything really

 

I used Hammerite when i painted up my engine, alternator, starter ect.....

Came up great!

Would recommend it to anyone tbh.

 

use a self-etch primer (on ally especially) to make sure it doesn't flake off later.

 

how long has it lasted though?

 

Rocker cover, alternator, isv and inlet manifold painted with plastikiote...Quite a while ago now and still look the same Edit:Whoops, charger painted too!

Thanks. The small bit is a little filter as i've done away with the boost return

The plastikote is pretty good stuff, sprays nicely, and gives a good finish with a few coats.

I used Hammerite on my cam cover years ago, after a quick wipe with an old rag it still looks good.

 

i prefer plastikote too, altho i have used hammerite and had good results. so im on the fence ish

 

Hammerite for me, used it many years ago and still looks great.

Spray paint reacts with oil, and if used on a cam cover or anywhere else that is going to be exposed to engine oil it will break down over a short time.

 

I used vht paint as a primer then silver wheel paint for all my silver parts on the engine and box, seems to be lasting ok

 

Do a search for PJ1 paint on ebay - high temp paint in satin black.

 

whats self etch primer? im no good with paint! can i get it from halfords?

 

Big red tin in Halfords called Acid 8 etch primer.

I did my gearbox, block, alternator, rocker cover, inlet manifold and other bits with it before painting.


Also noticed yesterday when I was doing up the shaft I kept wacking the gearbox with a wrench when tightening and it wasn't even making a mark on the paint let alone take it off.

hammerite and most rattle cans has problem with fuels. They dont resist it at all.

 

vht epoxy any good?
